couldnt disagree with you mate, I posted that with no comment really just in response to Farnhams comment ref being armed. moving from monk Breton to cudworth is bad enough never mind America!
A thread showing clashes with police. Clear that some protestors are distraught at others attacking police. Others hell bent on causing trouble and should be locked up.
The vast majority of the uk wide protests were peaceful. If you're a racist you will be of the "they've lost my support over this persuasion." I personally don't think they ever had it.
Agreed, it’s gone way way too far now. We can’t call someone black to describe them in case it offends, we can’t look at a woman in in frock and describe her as a woman in case she’s gender neutral and should be referred to as a ‘they’ an actress is now an actor. But whats irritated me the most is that these protestors will have been out in Thursday nights clapping for the NHS and making sure through their social media that the world knew about it, but then out of pure self righteousness they’ll put themselves and everyone who comes into contact with them at risk in order to protest about something that wasn't such a burning issue for them until the bandwagon started rolling. The hypocrisy of people attending and supporting these protests is staggering, they're not only putting their own lives at risk but yours and mine as well. Sorry, but if your skin is black you’re black, makes no odds to me if you’re a decent bloke what colour you are but it’s not racist to describe you as a black man if that is what you are. Ffs.
Before long we won't be able to call it a Full English Breakfast. We'll have to call it a Neutrally Fluid Breakfast. It's discusting
You tied yourself in knots, that is a result of being told you can't say this and can't say that, the worlds gone mad, the colour of a person is important when giving a description, more so if a black / white person is more of a minority where you live or in place you're at,
that’s way too much of a sweeping statement there Helen ( IMHO) . Take the pictures from the states, you have the peaceful leaders stating they are grief stricken about the recent police brutality and have been victimised for years at the same time there is mass looting and grinning black people coming out Of stores laden down with stuff they have nicked.Hardly goes together does it? Over here we have pictures of statues being torn down and defaced, not to mention attempts to set the national flag on fire. Now whether you agree with the people who put the statues up or not, there are legal ways and means of doing something about it other than say Tearing them down and chucking them in the river. The thing is we all know that black lads in certain areas will get tarnished and victimised but that’s also brought on by a lot of there peers that seem to get involved in more than there share of gang warfare. The same applies in areas where there are white gangs but that never seems to get brought up. My point is I am very anti racism but also very pro law abiding and the very fact that people are even saying that the protestors have lost sympathy is because of the extremists from rent a mob who infiltrate these kind of demonstrations and go out of there way to inflame the very racial tensions that others are trying to point out
If that were true, we wouldn’t be having this conversation (again). Just because you didn’t suffer racism yesterday, and you’re not likely to tomorrow either, doesn’t mean that’s a universal truth. You only have to read all the threads here this weekend to know that racism is alive and well, acceptable to a significant number of people and not something we can just draw a line under. If you wipe out all historic racism up to now, then by this time next week there’ll be plenty of new victims ready to protest. The only options to wipe out future racism is by changing society or to wipe out all the racists.
With regards to this particular statue, they've been debating for years and years about taking it down. Nothing has happened. They've been debating for years about changing the wording on the plaque - nothing has happened due to disagreements about what the new wording would say. The knee can only be taken for so long and find it ignored before further action occurs.
Still not right, it sets a precedent that if some folk don’t like something They can do what they want and that can never be right. Same for the morons that scrawled all over the Churchill statue.
So if you're a black person living in Bristol, every time you walk past a statue that speaks of one of the cities "favourite sons" you just have to suck it up. Fall in line boy, back to the Plantation you go.
Do I agree with the way the statue was removed - no I dont but lets be clear on this. This is a symbolic protest - its a long way from looting and attacking police officers. and as @Fonzie says after years of legal protests absolutely nothing has happened. This is a statue to a man who was head of a company that gained its wealth from shipping slaves in such appalling conditions that one in 5 of them died in the journey and then profited again from their slave labour. I am white and am uncomfortable that in the 21st Century a statue like that is in a prominent place, so I can fully understand why those of African descent find it inappropriate - it should as others have said have been moved to a museum a long time ago. For me the bigger problem is the way that the likes of Patel and Johnson have siezed on this to try and discredit the whole protest. I find it sad that Patel in particular seems more angry that a slave traders statue was removed than almost anything else since she became Home Secretary
Wonder how long a statue of Margaret Thatcher would last if it was erected in the centre of Barnsley....
I agree its not right, its also not right that the statue was still there in the first place - do 2 wrongs make a right? I am not sure but in the grand scheme of things this is a slight exception, Its also totally different to the "morons that scrawled on Churchills" statue or defaced a war memorial
I’ve been very impressed by the new ‘policing’ policy. You’d think that after the Cummings incident, and doing nothing, the close contact during protests and doing nothing, doing nothing when the crowd criminally damages a statue and throws it in the harbour, you could be forgiven for thinking the policy is, ‘do nothing’. I was shocked to find that ‘doing nothing’ is not the policy when I saw on the news, protesters illegally walking on the M6 and the police, not clearing the motorway for traffic to flow, but actually closing it to allow the protesters to break the law. What is going on? Have the government’s police cuts forced a policy change to ‘just do what’s easiest’
