What are they doing now?! (A61 / A616 junction)
Must be ten years non stop of digging it up and relaying it.

Reducing size of roundabout - to what it was originally !!
Creating a filter lane for traffic turning left or heading to Grenoside from the Birdwell end.
doing something to ease the problem of traffic from Grenoside and traffic from Manchester both converging on the road to Birdwell -

Latest update on the rats ?

Didnt they start doing this a few years ago and stop because it was unsafe due to subsidence or something?

Doesn't really explain the trench they have dug into the roundabout?
They did have a filter lane going left from Grenoside towards Manchester about 7 years ago - but it caused more delays.

Rat update. Cat now on day 12 of lockdown. Not seen any rats, but the poison put down freely last week is still out there.
We're on with a fence building project to try and keep her off next door's garden. No doubt it will take 2-3 days to construct, and about 5 minutes for the cat to suss out and get over!

One thing we've learnt from all this is that there is pretty much no protection for us from Police, RSPCA or Council - seems throwing poison around is perfectly ok.

There are rules governing it though. For example it can't really be bear the boundary where it could be eaten by someone or something passing.

How exactly is the poison being used? Is it in sachets or loose in trays? I think you mentioned bags but what did you mean by that?
And do you know what kind of poison is being used and what the concentration level is?

The way the poison is used is your only hope of using the law to stop it really if they aren't following the rules. The kind of poison and it's concentration will tell you just how dangerous it is for your cat. If it's the weaker stuff then unless your cat is eating the rats or mice whole it should be fine. The stronger stuff I wouldn't be risking it.

They're daft using poison anyway they'd have a lot more luck with traps. Do you get rats in your garden or is it only in theirs? I'd try buying a few traps, baiting them and putting them bear their side of the garden and seeing what you catch then approaching them and telling them how successful you've been

the roundabout was enlarged some years ago - now being made smaller!
You mention subsidence - driving past McD and is it Taybarn (sp) towards the fire station it's like a roller coaster so I wonder if the whole area is blighted with subsidence.

Poison = Bromadiolone = only available to professional pest controllers. However, they way it's being put down (in bags to be torn open) is far from professional. Also chucked over a fence into a garden accessed by a neighbour's dog (although our neighbour insists it's their land). We've done enough research into the risks to know it's a real danger to our cat, and that the way the poison is being administered goes against the Code of conduct.

The only rats we get are brought by our cat as gifts. We know better than to put food all over the floor. Since reading up on it all, I am dead against killing rats with poison - it's a slow and agonising death for intelligent animals. Don't get me wrong, I don't want rats in the house, but I also don't want to see an animal suffer. It should be against the law to kill them in this way. Loads of evidence of Owls, cats, hedgehogs etc being killed by secondary poisoning.

Bromadiolone is actually one of the weaker poisons available. To reach the level of toxicity to kill an average full size cat it would have to eat over a kilo and half which is 250 times what it takes to kill a rat. Should make you feel more comfortable in theory but I'm pretty sure in practice that's no help to you at all when you're worried about your pet.

Looking at an old map it seems there was a mine in Tankersley as well as a Train Station on the Barnsley to Chapeltown line (not the same line as the present Barnsley-Wombwell-Chapeltown line.

Not what our vet says, not what the cat shelter says, not what the council says, not what the Owls trust says. We've been warned that this poison is only given to professional licensed controllers (the one in question is retired so possibly still has a supply, but probably isn't licensed). Our vet has warned that it is lethal, although secondary dose is obviously less lethal - bare minimum a huge vets bill. Every single organisation we have contacted has told us the same. It's considered to be one of the most dangerous ones - especially as thrown around indiscriminately. Every single person we have spoken to (apart from our neighbour) has told us to keep our cat indoors (because she's hunted at the target site). It's unfair in the extreme because our neighbour knew this.

God knows why they're telling you that it can only be bought by licensed pest controllers because it's definitely one of the least lethal which is why it's allowed to be used outside. Brodifacoum and Flocoumafen are the most lethal (4 times as lethal to rats) and can only be used indoors.
Bromadiolone based poisons can be bought and used outdoors by anyone, the only restriction to that is the concentration with domestic use being 0.003% or lower and professional use being 0.005%. brodifacoum and flocoumafen (and another who's name I forget) are professional only.

Can you link me to your info, because we have spoken to people within the industry who've said the same thing. The pest controller himself siad it was Grade A poison, (before he knew we were opposed to it).
