I’m not saying colonialism is a good thing, rather the opposite if you read my text clearly. What I am saying is the countries colonised at that time somewhat allowed themselves to be by default due to their own delayed evolution at that time. What we did around the world historically was abhorrent in the main but if it weren’t us, then I’d wager another more technically evolved nation of the time than those colonised would’ve taken our place in history, such is the innate greed of mankind in general.
Hmmm...not really, not on any mainstream news media that I’ve watched anyway. You have your opinions and I’ll have mine on this, that’s the best thing as your no more correct than I am pal. I didn’t see anyone wanting the statue of Churchill pulled down or shouting that he was a racist and defacing it with graffiti before last weekend? Those same protesters wouldn’t be experiencing a civilised standard of living in this country today if hitler had not been stopped by this mans actions. As I’ve said, this nation has colonial history, good or bad. Deal with it fella.
Why would the national media have a ‘need’ story that citizens of Bristol were campaigning for a statue to be removed? not important enough. However the Oxford students campaigning for the removal of Rhodes statue has indeed been a news story for years (definitely been reported in the broadsheets). I find it alarming that you don’t believe something has happened just because you didn’t know it. It’s a very strange world view - expecting to know everything.
Here's one from the BBC: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-45825768 So actually, he is more correct than you are.
So two statues of colonial figures I hadn’t studied nor thought about before last weekend and I’d wager neither had you which weren’t widely reported about outside their own cities. Where have I said I don’t believe something eh? Just a thought, please read my posts correctly and my view of our historic colonialism before attempting to slander my messages with cheap shots at my level of intelligence please.
I've just read the article regarding Gone With The Wind. It actually says that HBO have temporarily removed it and it will be uploaded again alongside a discussion in the near future. To me that makes sense. Once again people need to look past headlines and actually read and digest articles.
It’s gang up on me time again is it! Huge lololol! BBC Bristol 2years since. Well forgive me for not concerning myself with news in Bristol, I am very sorry I am so ignorant of that part of the country, Absolutely fook my life! Glad to be corrected, I’ll sleep well tonight now, thanks for that fella!
Can't believe you weren't aware of the man that Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and Northern Rhodesia (now part of Zambia) were named after? A white supremacist with a nasty streak a mile long who only actually attended Oxford (Oriel College) for one term and wanted the British to rule the entire world. Did Britain go to war with Hitler's Germany to stop the rise of fascism, or because a more powerful Germany threatened our place in the World? Churchill shared many of Hitler's views - he hated Indians, ordered the killing of anti-Nazi soldiers in Greece to support a far-right government there in 1944 and opened concentration camps in South Africa, Malaysia and Kenya (latter two *after* the war). Churchill is a complex character with many personality flaws, but he was the right man at the right time for most of the second world war. You can't *just* see the good or the bad.
You’ve clearly neither read your post or mine Like I said, it’s been reported on, just cos you don’t recall doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
Add to that him setting troops on striking miners. What he was responsible for makes Orgreave look like a family picnic.
And his actions in Ireland, Gallipolli, and various other "issues" during his time as a MP, Minister or PM.
Why would I know all this you spout eh? Sorry for not being the font of all imperialist knowledge that you clearly are Google’s a magnificent tool when you want to try an argue a point though eh fella! Pmsl! I’ll just leave this here as BLMUK seems to matter that much to you. Why don’t you join their cause and abolish the police so we can all live in an anarchic state?
I see you didnt show all the text from the gofundme page. That being said the concept of not having a police force is clearly ridiculous. However a redistribution of some funds towards pulling the poorest communities out of poverty and therefore reducing crime is worth looking at. There are people in our police force and those around the world that need rooting out. As for knowledge of Cecil Rhodes, a passing interest in the history of a country you champion and claim to be so proud of should have taught you about him long ago.
Benny Hill ? Apologies if I've missed something, the height of his career was before I was born, but I didn't think you could lump him in with Jim Davidson
Oh give over now please! I’ve posted the page header elsewhere and couldn’t be arsed to replicate it for your delectation. Just the fact they want to abolish police in this country makes their cause somewhat comedic no? I’m sorry but I was never taught about Rhodes at Broadway/kingstone school back in the day from recollection so should I blame my teachers from that era? We’re they all closet racists I wonder? I’ve had more pressing concerns serving her majesty’s Air Force the last 30 years so haven’t had time to become an imperialist historian as you clearly have obviously from your sarcastic tone. Too busy engineering aircraft in the defence of this country sorry. You are somewhat pedantic fella aren’t you eh? You are seeing things a certain way and so am I, let’s just leave it at that shall we?
If I may just quote George Orwell, sums this mob rule we must rewrite our history I’m right you’re wrong situation up very nicely: “ every statue and street has been re named, ......and the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right” this is from 1984. Reminds me so much of the idealistic self righteous occupiers of the moral high ground currently telling us how we should think. What we shouldn't watch. Whose memory we should erase. That if we don’t believe that only their way is the way then we must be racists. He was so perceptive of our future in what he wrote
Not pedantic. Just despairing. For what it's worth i didn't learn about Rhodes at school either. I also worked for 40 years. Learning stuff after leaving school doesn't make me anything special. It's just something you'd expect to happen.
