Having just read this thread and numerous others on more or less the same subject... And having also witnessed the fall out between certain members on here once again.. I ask Is there any need for the personal insults that get traded by both parties
.. I therfore guess it it would be inappropriate of me at this time to request fellow members take a deep breath

I think all the churches, schools and children’s homes that he contributed to might argue that his main contribution to the world was slavery. He was part of a major firm that’s business included slavery and after leaving spent most of his life doing what was considered to be philanthropy work. To the extent that the local community decided to ho our that work as a philanthropist.

Another way to look at it is we're restoring past history, to the years before there were statues there.

Agree on the banner. But is it fact.
Article in Egypt today. 1 day ago.
Latest evidence suggests they were built by paid workers. not slave labour ( who am I to argue on years of research by experts) The afterlife was a big belief in those days. Hence em being burial monuments rather than tributes. ( for all includng workers ).

Seriously Shed, I don’t think there’s anything much more than differences of opinion in this thread. It’s not even handbags. ( some other threads 100% agree)
I fully agree on your take a deep breath before replying to a comment.

Except the statue wasn’t of a slaver, it was erected to celebrate his philanthropy, not him.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Roots. Well I have now.
Fantastic series. First shown in 1977.
