Just to prove that there are some spectacularly stupid people on the left as well

I see the Daily Heil is all over this bit of bizarre nonsense from former Labour MP - fired due to criminal conviction - Fiona Onasanya

Really dont know where to start with this one - there are some hilarious replies but this is exactly the sort of thing that undermines the real fight against racism

I sometimes despair, the world is full of awful incidences and examples of horrible Racists carryings on, and as you say, this doesn’t help at all.

I really despair with some folk!
How racist do you have to be to see a cute monkey having connotations with black people?
There are racists on all sides of the divide and stuff like this certainly doesn't help

I wonder if we’ll see any posts in support/defending this in the same spirit as Govt Ministers have been defended. In other words, she’s one of ours, I voted for them, therefore It must be defended.

I can see why she has made that link, and why she questioned it. Especially this day in age where anything and everything can be questioned.

But in all honesty, I have seen those adverts for years, and never once thought about racism or put it in the context of what she has done.

I just don't know what's what anymore, so if I just ignore it, and carry on, am I know being ignorant of it... Dunno

Im guessing she means the elves by her 'white boys' term. Not even aimed at being human.

I could suggest that there is a big difference between a golliwog - a fictional caracature of a black person and a monkey - an actual real life animal that actually lives in the same type of environment as Coco trees

I don’t think it’s racist, but I can see that back in the 60s when they were marketing Coco Pops, they wanted a brown coloured mascot for it and they wouldn’t have even considered a black child. Is it wrong that they chose a monkey? No. And if they took the same mascot as Rice Krispies and painted them black, I’m sure now they would get accused of blackface.

But it does show something that they chose a brown animal, rather than a human-like brown mascot. I don’t know what it shows, but I do think it shows something...

However, Snap Crackle and Pop are elves not human children, so I think it all just falls apart at that fact.

It shows nothing of the sort
    Cornflakes have a chicken
    Frosties have a Tiger
Sugar Puffs has a Honey Monster.
    Rice Krispies have elves
    Coco Pops have a Monkey

You really struggle to find a racist slant here unless you are claiming that pictures of Monkeys are inherently racist

I agree with everything you say. I did open my post by saying I don’t think it’s racist.

My first thought on opening this thread was “how ******* ridiculous” but then I stopped and pictured the time where they were designing coco pops and coming up with the brown mascot. Not a brown version of the Rice Krispies elves, but a monkey. Again, I don’t think it’s racist, but I do think it shows something that they went to a money in that situation. Again. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.

Also the white chocolate coco pops which happen to be white in colour also use the same Monkey as the mascot. No racist slant on this at all its just a case of someone trying to take offence at something for the sake of it.

God knows what she will do when she finds out there is a place called Blackpool.

You, I or other (white) people might not claim that pictures of monkeys are racist, but - monkey chanting, throwing bananas on the pitch, etc are also seen by us as racist. Danny Baker had to quit the BBC for posting a social media picture of a chimpanzee for the birth of Prince Archie.

There could be an argument that if you have been racistly called a monkey that seeing a monkey *could* have racist undertones.

calling a black person a monkey or throwing a banana at someone is indeed a racist act.

however having a cartoon monkey as a mascot for your breakfast cereal isn't. if using a monkey image in any circumstance is deemed racist then we will have to ban an awful lot of stuff. Curious george for one will be a total no no and that Cadburys advert with the gorilla playing the drums will have to be deleted from the internet fully.

comparing someone physically calling another person a monkey to a brand using a monkey as a mascot is totally different. One is an illegal act the other isn't.
