That article is confusing as it doesn't specify who has been offered a new contract who was otherwise up this month. Surely we've not offered new terms to Adeboyejo, Green and Miller? But there's no indication of who is under contract already. Are the players who'd been out on loan now coming back to us (the aforementioned three, McGeehan, Sibbick)? Gutted to see Dougall go. Twice the player Ritzmaier is and it would have made sense to at least try and retain him until the end of this season. Looking down that list, we're desperately short of a quality squad aren't we?
I think the club should take more care when signing players. I'll use Miller as an example. Is Miller going to play in the Championship if we're promoted Daniel? No Gauthier. We're not signing him then Daniel. Scrub Daniel, Goathier and substitute Miller and it's a massive problem in my opinion.
Radlinger, Dougall, Pinillos, Thiam and Mowatt were all out of contract. As the article states, Mowatt's contract was extended (an option was triggered) whereas the other four will leave after next Tuesday. You referred to Adeboyejo, Green and Miller. All are under contract. https://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/2018/december/victor2021/ https://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/2019/january/miller-signs/ https://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/2019/january/jordan-green/ All the players you refer to regards being away on loan, except McGeehan, are no longer on loan. Their respective seasons were ended. Portsmouth are in the playoffs next week, they've extended that arrangement to retain Cameron's services. Mallik Wilks is also away on loan still, with Hull City. But as of right now, he's back on Tuesday next week. No returning loan player can play for us this season, as stipulated by the EFL. That desperately short of quality squad beat QPR on Saturday away, and have won four of the last six.
Cheers, that clears it up. Interesting we can't use returning loan players but I wonder if that means we can bring signings in and play them straight off? I hope you're right about the quality! Stave off injuries and we might have a chance.
All players brought in are selected by the club. The Head Coach may request certain players, but it's the club who makes the choice. It was first done by the club in 2015 under Patrick Cryne and has continued since. Recently, Dane Murphy admitted this was the club's stated policy and would continue to be the case. Johnson, Heckingbottom, Stendel & Struber have all had to work within this situation. I wonder if those who make the decisions with regards to player recruitment are held responsible when they get things wrong? Perhaps they are.
It wasn't the process I was bemoaning. It's the signing of players that aren't going to make the first team on a regular basis. Just seems a waste of a squad place or a signing to me.
Its basically a continuation of the season except some contacts end on 30th June which will obviously disadvantage some clubs if the players won't play on beyond that.
I would’ve kept Dougall. We’ve not got a defensive minded midfielder in the squad unless Palmer’s one & he’s only a kid & more importantly I think Dougall’s a good footballer. Even if Struber doesn’t want to start him he’s ideal to bring on if we’re defending a lead. Bird’s a disappointing one. I never saw enough of him to rate him either way but he got a decent contract & had a promising performance at Wembley against Spurs & I thought logic suggested he’d make it. Very strange that he’s not played any first team football with us or on loan for 2 years. The only appearance I’ve found for him was a 45 minute go in pre-season last summer, if he has been injured then it’s really strange the clubs never said anything. Most of the rest makes sense. No point keeping Radlinger or Pinillos when there’s 2 players in each position who are preferred to them. If we really did get decent offers for Thiam then we properly messed up not selling him. Reminds me of when we didn’t flog Matty Done to Palace & then released him on a free the following summer. We’ve still got a big squad & given the fallout from this virus we’re likely to have problems selling players. If we do go down I wouldn’t be expecting many players will be joining us as we’ll not be able to trim the wage bill enough to bring them in.
I just want to add my thanks and best wishes for the future to Kenny Dougall, Dani Pinillos & Mamadou Thiam for their huge contribution to our memorable, promotion winning season of 2018/19.
Ok I did wonder if the figures quoted for Mama were over inflated. As for Dougall I meant we have lost what we should have been able to sell him on for
I do like Dougall, and I think we will miss him. I don't believe he has any love for the club at all, like a Hassell or a Hammill. It's just a job to him, which he went about with a cold-eyed professionalism at every turn. I've always thought we are a better team with him in it and we don't have anyone else like him in the squad. He gave his best, every game, without fail. What's that saying about needing seven road sweepers and four violinists or how ever it was expressed? He was very much a road sweeper - and that's not a criticism, because he did it really well. Good luck to the lad wherever he ends up next. I wish it could have been different.
