The owner of barnsley publicly stating that if a player doesn't wish to stay after their contract ends then the club will choose to sell them is wildly different to a player forcing a move under contract.
Did pinnock hand on a transfer request or did he simply say that he didn't want to sign an extension tying him down after is contract expires in a years time? You can guess that the first happened. The fact is the owner of the club has stated that the second did
This thread has now had 2961 views. It has attracted 121 replies, and yet no-one has attempted to answer the awkward question that I posed in my opening post. That question is this: In 2019, Barnsley's match day income for the season was just over £3m. That compares to profit from the sale of players of £4m. The club made more money from the sale of players than it did from selling tickets to its fans. So how much would you be prepared to put into your club in order to fund your ambitions. If the price of admission was doubled, it would generate £3m extra revenue. Would you be prepared to double your investment. How about tripling your investment to generate an extra £6m. Would that mean that the club could hold on to a few more players who would otherwise have to be sold. It is still nowhere near the investment of some of the owners listed above, but at least you would be making a more realistic contribution, or does that not matter, because it is not your club. It is their club, and you just pay to watch them play. As I have said elsewhere, I try to be controversial because I want to get readers thinking. I want to promote a debate, and getting people to try to answer the hard questions is part of the process. Clearly, everyone knows that it is a hard question, and consequently, they have concentrated on other things. They have done what the politicians do. They have avoided the hard question and they have instead answered their own question, a question that is very much easier to deal with. Anyway, I just thought that I would ask it again. Just in case anyone is feeling brave this morning.
We could maybe try not wasting money instead Imo you haven't asked an hard question. You've asked a silly question. You have pretended that there are no other options other than to continue wasting money and funding losses. It is so blinkered it's untrue. And the reason is you are just looking at numbers and not looking at the players
Is that true? Perhaps you should read other people's posts more carefully then, offer them the same respect as you demand from others, instead of massaging your own ego. Thanks for the viewing stats, well done Red Rain you are so intelligent and wise
I have finally got round to checking the assertion in your opening paragraph. That assertion was that you do not have to fund continual losses to be promoted from the Championship, and you quoted Huddersfield and Sheffield United as examples. Company balance sheets contain a line called RETAINED EARNINGS. What this represents is the accumulated profits or losses of the company since its formation. It is adjusted for Corporation Tax and Dividends, but since football club rarely if ever pay either, I have ignored it. I thought that you might be interested in the retained losses of those two clubs up to 2018. They are Huddersfield Town -£31m Sheffield United -£32m. Just for comparison the figure for Barnsley is £3m cumulative profit.
Are you a politician. I only asked because you have avoided the question once more. As I say, the reason I asked that question is because it is a hard one. Posters would much rather tell those that are running the club that they have no idea how to do it, even though they have no experience, little information and few facts. They are speaking as frustrated supporters who are not getting what they want. And yet, when I ask a question that they are qualified to answer, they avoid it.
You are asking a silly question though. It is like if you subscribe to sky, virgin, by sport, talk talk, now TV and all the others and saying 'im losing money. I need to ask for a payrise from my boss'. No you need to stop wasting money. I can't tell you how much extra I'm willing to pay to find us signing over a dozen crap players because I don't want us to waste money signing over a dozen crap players.
Of course it is. I'm surprised you didn't refer to yourself in the third person if I'm completely honest. Titus will leave you to it anyway. Good look with the view count, exciting times!
I can’t answer your questions, but I’ll tell you this. Last night I chatted about FFP with my other half, a Wednesday fan. The latest rumour is that their points deduction won’t make a difference to the table standings because it’s so small. We discussed FFP and agreed that it is utterly pointless, and that BFC once again will be relegated having kept to a plan and a strict budget, whilst other clubs continue to live beyond their means. This morning I feel depressed about football. It just seems pointless. Money dictates, and we will never compete. If we do compete it means we have joined the ranks of those flouting the rules. Either way, it’s crap. I don’t mind league one. We win more games, but what’s the point if you end up swapping places with Rotherham every time? I bought a Season Ticket in a moment of weakness. I really wish I hadn’t. Football just doesn’t have the same appeal any more.
Awkward question back at you (with no malice): If everyone accepts that your analysis is correct, what is the point of following Barnsley? Are we not then stuck with the present unsatisfactory situation for evermore?
To answer your question then: no, I'm not willing to pay double or treble to watch BFC. The 21st century has seen football in this country transformed by huge money from TV deals, which has dramatically changed the landscape for the club I support. Fact. We all know that. When Andy Ritchie got us promoted back to the Championship we spent 7 out 8 seasons scrapping to avoid relegation. Mark Robins had one season of relative success but then left as he knew that without the necessary investment that success couldn't be sustained. I'd watched a team capable of competing at this level for years in the 80s and 90s, but now it seemed that was incredibly difficult. If anything it's become even more difficult as more teams in the Championship have got owners willing to spend multi millions to reach the big money of the Premier League. Barnsley don't have owners willing to invest in the same way. That's their choice. They're trying a different method of gradual and incremental improvements. However this year they've got it wrong and their recruitment, the absolute linchpin on which their method hinges, hasn't been good enough. It's an incredibly difficult strategy and also requires a gifted coach who's able to achieve success against all the odds. If Struber had been here all season and had been given the freedom to buy a couple of older heads such as Solbauer in the summer and if we'd kept one or two like Pinnock and Moore, the strategy might have worked. We'll never know.
We signed very young players, but as I see it, we signed players with enormous potential. This will be controversial, but my feeling is that this one is a better squad than the last relegated squad. I also have a confession. I pay less for my season ticket than you do because I am over 65. However, I am not going to avoid the question, and yes, I would be willing to pay more if I thought that it would give me a better watching experience.
That kind of sums up how I feel too. I've also renewed my season ticket and sort of regret it. However, I now see it as more of an investment to keep the club going in such a difficult time, because the future in League One is incredibly uncertain.
My complaint isn't that we signed young players it's that we wasted money signing too many young players for absolutely no reason. Both the CEO and manager have complained we have too many players. The owner boasted of the extremely large amount of players we have
I didn't respond because the OP makes no sense to me at all. We've been competitive in the Championship this season, as evidenced by 6pts against the team lying in 4th position & our performance on Sunday. Whatever we spent this last season was enough & we've just been unlucky.
I think because RedRain is very wordy and presents his opinions as his way or only one other way, rather then accepting there is a range of opinions within that it comes across as condescending rather than actually meaning to be.
