I took a look at their message board earlier on. Apart from a couple of them they seem delighted we stayed up. Two proper clubs in the Championship next season.
Never really understood the animosity between Rovrum and Barnsley. It seems to be a fairly recent thing, I went to school in the 70s at Wath and most of my mates were Rotherham fans and there was never any bother.
It’s a fixture I’d like to attend. At either Oakwell or Rotherham. Local derbies are always fiercely contested affairs.
When's the SPL season starting again, Ian? I tried searching for that opening St Johnstone v Dundee United match but it keeps coming up with some old game from a few years ago.
They've never interested me. When I was growing up they were always in the old third and fourth division and we were in the second division/Championship. I saw our rivals as Sheffield Utd and Huddersfield because they were the two in division with us. Similarly I never classed Sheff Wed or Leeds as rivals because they were in the Premier League. I hate Leeds though because of their fans. Sheffield Wed was because they played dull, boring football and played in blue and their stadium looked dull and dreary whenever I saw it on MOTD. I don't get the rivalry with Doncaster either. When I was young they weren't even in the league.
We've only played them about half a dozen times in my life so whilst I'll look forward to the games, theres no animosity whatsoever from me.
It's strange how much of our our perceptions are fixed during our youth. For me, local derbies were Doncaster, Bradford, Huddersfield, and Halifax. All in Division 4. Rotherham were in the next tier, so rarely considered. It was a few years before I saw us play either of the Sheffield clubs, and Leeds were on a different planet. I still enjoy games against Donnie and Bradford more than I do the Blades or Owls. I don't have much animosity towards any of the local sides, really. Most northern sides are in a similar boat to ourselves and are supported, in the main, by down to earth folk.
There's never been any animosity because they've been traditionally s.hitter than us. Things might change.
Never been perturbed by either Rotherham or Doncaster. Wins against them mean nothing other than the three points. The Manor Top elbowers are the ones who wind me up the most, followed by their neighbours. Beating Leeds is fun, but it doesn't compare to crushing one of the deedars. Us, Rotherham and Doncaster should be friendly with each other, really, for we have a common enemy.
I'm sure it is. Maybe not the nutters that shout the loudest or ring Football Heaven every night to ask if Wednesday have signed anybody today. But the rank and file supporters are no different to the rest of us. Although they're possibly a bit ranker...
