The fact is that the BBC and their funding model is becoming unsustainable. 99.9% of the kids I work with are not interested in the BBC and it's content.

It's a shame because when it's good it's good, but unfortunately it's too far up it's own arse to realise the changes happening in consumer habits.

Yes, it's a relevant topic because we all pay a tax for it but it seems to be unaccountable to anyone.

 

I swear the BBC were the first at streaming in the UK with Iplayer - well ahead of the curve!

I think most of the UK TV that is widely watched is from BBC and 4, who both get license fee money.

I also think local radio is important

 

I've always loved the BBC. Fair enough it succumbs to the usual Saturday evening garbage but it produces some great programming. Try moving abroad and putting up with the absolute s**te served up not to mention the endless commercials. It's the main thing i miss about home.

 

I love the BBC, The right wing snowflakes have convinced them selves It’s biased. It isn’t of course. That will do for me.

 

That’s because the vast majority of BBC viewers / listeners have no idea they’re ‘consumers’, and the ‘consumers’ have no idea that a load of the content they love is paid for by all of us directly.

 

Soothing in the way some fairy stories are soothing? They are often works of fiction

 

Aye. Citizen Kane, Gone With The Wind, The Matrix, Shawshank Redemption...they can all ********. Give me BBC weather forecast every time.

 

Dont you like to hear that the rain will be clearing later on in the day? And all the weather pictures?

 

I once went out with someone who hated weather forecasts. Completely detested them for some irrational reason that even she couldn't articulate, and would switch off whenever one came on.

 

I love the BBC. They own the only channels that don’t air Just Eat adverts.

Got to stick up for the BBC here. The best programmes, good value (compare your licence fee to your Sky subscription), money invested in programming and don't have to watch adverts. How can any alternative be better?

Speaking of them though, as our national broadcaster, I think they should *have* to broadcast at least one match of each team per season from the top flight team from the country's national game {well England and Scotland anyway).

I don't have a problem with Public Service Broadcasting, but I have a problem with the bloated, self serving, self congratulatory BBC as it is now. A budget cut might make it think about its priorities more.

 

You may be correct but I find it odd that the area you thought was best to cut was the unique regional programming.

 

But it serves an ever declining audience and doesn't appeal to the young in enough numbers. Young people don't see it's relevance in my experience. This leaves them open to Americanisation. I have learners using dollars as a unit of currency ffs!!

So you don't use the bbc website for news & sport? It is a public service, it's not supposed to be run like Netflix etc. Yes it does do entertainment, but that is not its raison d'etre.
After the NHS I think it is one of our finest public bodies. Lived abroad a lot (Africa mainly) and the BBC world service is without doubt the most trusted news service around. 'Buys' us untold influence around the globe.

 

My point is that IMO they don’t.

The licence fee isn’t directly equivalent to a Netflix or Sky subscription - no matter how much some people try to pretend it is.

 

Given the option, I wonder how many of us would subscribe to the BBC ?
