Sorry, I was specifically referring to when the design was changed to accommodate the vertical lifts. The timeframe then was quoted as winter 2021- unless the council were referring to their financial year and winter 2021 meant Jan, Feb. March? I never saw Spring 2021 quoted, but a 6 month delay since is clearly understandable.

It’s annoying it’s taking so long when they had plenty of time to plan it and get it in before they started the Cineworld construction (given the March 19 level crossing closure was planned for years in advance), but I suspect they wanted the design to fit in around those buildings rather than fitting those around a bridge.

 

Commissioned and paid for by Network Rail. Keep blaming the council though ...

The bridge connects a busy pedestrian pavement - and the bridge has been found to be unsafe - hence it’s closure on match days.
Are you tell me Barnsley Council has no say in the structure of an unsafe bridge connecting a public rights of way ?!?!?

It’s not unsafe for everyday use as it is used everyday except on match days. It’s probably more likely just unsuitable for use on match days due to the ‘heavy ‘traffic’ Is this why you say ‘it’s found to be unsafe’

Wrong again, it’s not suitable to have large numbers of people using it, as would be the case on match days. You said the bridge was found to be unsafe, wrong, wrong and wrong again. We can’t call your brain Rubber Johnny as it’s not been used even once.

 

Heavy footfall no - that's why it's open when matches aren't on without any problems - quite a narrow bridge as well - would imagine that many people going along could cause problems. They could have spent more putting up a bigger / temporary bridge but some would have moaned about the cost

 

The bridge will be a sight, taller than the cinema building when its finished.

 

As a Barnsley resident/ ratepayer, and someone who will be a user of the bridge, I’m not wanting anything Granduer. Just something practical for all, and in fitting with rest of of the new development.

 

The bridge hasn’t been built as a temporary structure to last for just a fot nit.
It’s a structure that’s been built between a busy section of the town to last for years.

It’s a carbuncle and a huge embarrassment for the people of Barnsley.
It’s ugly and to make matters worse it’s not fit for purpose.
That responsiblity has to be laid at the door of this inept council.
Thank goodness the M1 Motorway that passes Barnsley or Barnsley Hospital dosen’t have to close when they get too busy.

 

Yeah the two situations are exactly the same - if they'd spent millions on a bridge that is going to come down again people would have complained. It's temporary as it is being replaced- just as we had the temporary market building.

Definition of temporary

- lasting for only a limited period of time; not permanent.

Network Rail made this decision to close it as the crossing wasn't safe- that's why they are putting up a large chunk of money to build the new bridge.

 

I’m not embarrassed by it and have not heard anyone else say they are embarrassed by it. It’s a Temporary bridge put in place until the permanent one is ready. It easily suffices on a day to day basis, but not deemed to suffice on match days. It has not been found to be unsafe as you keep claiming.
