I'm not embarrassed by it either, it's a temporary bridge, was promoted and installed as a temporary bridge, and will be removed in due course. What I am embarrassed about is that appalling fencing around the so called car park at the top of New Street (where the cardigan club used to be). Now this is something the Council should do something about.They are spending hundreds of thousands pulling down the Dev and tarting that area up, they should insist the owners of this monstrosity on New Street improves what's there .

Quite literally all structures like this have a caveat like that. Do you think that lifts are certified for unlimited passengers in one go? No of course not. They all have Maximum occupancy stated on a sign. Do you think Oakwell is allowed to just keep admitting more and more people? Of course not

I guess it’s harder for the council to enforce anything when it’s privately owned land. I’m sure I read something in the Chronicle a while back about them encouraging the owner to keep that space for a Travelodge, but I could’ve just made that up. Although I can’t imagine much demand for a hotel right now.

Before anything of note could be built up there I’d be inclined to demolish the remaining shops (Big Man etc.) to create enough space. I suspect a drive thru or two would fit nicely.

Is that an admission that you were wrong about the bridge ‘being found to be unsafe’

 

If it was up to me then I'd demolish the same as you say and create a classy paved area as an entrance to the town from that side. It would look amazing with Wellington house and the building on the corner of pall mall being fully uncovered and visible from Westway.

We got a statement entrance into the town at gateway plaza, there's the stylish entrance at market gate with the carpark and bridge, they're demolishing one of the buildings near courthouse to create a visible entrance there but the top of new street has been ignored which is barmy because id say it's where the majority of barnsley people enter the town centre from.

In an ideal world I'd pave and create a square with benches and a few small trees and I'd convert Wellington house into a series of small boutique style independent shops of a similar size to the lanes in meadowhall as I don't think there are enough of these in barnsley, everything is too big for the truly independent little traders.

Let’s move on eh the new bridge will be mint, the crossing had to be shut for a certain time for the funding! The temporary bridge does a job day to day, just to had I don’t feel in anyway unsafe but it’s not brilliant and could have been more aesthetically pleasing but it is only temporary.
It’s a minor inconvenience having to walk round to be fair and more often than not I can call at The Manx for a jar before the game.

I thought someone had said it a while back to be fair but couldn't remember if I'd imagined it.

Every time I go to barnsley I feel a little bit sad as I cross the road near Morrisons and see how beautiful the top half of Wellington house is and how it is hidden behind an ugly Harding lined carpark and half a red brick shop.

If I was a millionaire I'd get the sandblaster out n every building in the town centre because if people looked up instead of down they'd realise just how beautiful most of the buildings are or would be if they were cleaned up and restored.

But you're right, it's a complete eyesore detracting from some of the little good architecture left in town.

 

Just walk round when it’s closed, Nudge. You’ll feel loads better for it! You could also use that extra time to consider how to project your anger towards the council in a more productive way.

I still think Nudger's Bridge is a small hamlet in North Yorkshire.......
