You’ll definitely see some decent league two and possibly league one players drop into the National League unless they adopt a similar approach.
for me this should herald a change. rationalise league 2 and the conference national. League 2 north, league 2 south with feeder leagues from a new national league north and south. There is a staggeringly amount of stupid travelling going on at national league and league 2 for that matter. a simple overnight stay costs up to 6K, they could pay 4 players for that. cut costs, more local games.
That's nearly 8 times the cap agreed for L1. A huge gap. And that's assuming it's voted in. Some Championship clubs owners won't like the idea of not being able to throw their financial weight around.
It’s the right move. Provides sustainability and levels the playing field. Maybe seems a little artificially low but that will be trial and error to get it right. We as fans Of a small town club should welcome this.
Surely not a good idea when there's football leagues all over the world? You see countries like China and India bringing over players for insane money. The English leagues have a lot of talent, are they now all easy pickings for teams who can pay more money?
This is why we needed Wednesday to get relegated this season. They would have had to get rid of all their big earners. They would have been in L1 for years.
In principle I agree, but I think it'll take a while to get right. The L1 cap looks incredibly low. It could still have a knock-on effect of players not wanting to sign for Barnsley as they'd be worried about having to take a massive pay cut if we went down. It's definitely a step in the right direction, though. This issue crossed my mind as well.
As Merde Tete states above, I agree with it in principle, but I don't agree with the first iteration of it. 1.2 million quid for a squad for a year in League 2, when some Premier League players are on 350,000 per week. Some gap there.
Surely it also encourages a ‘smaller club’ to gamble with much higher wages than they can afford if they get promoted to Championship in desperate attempt to stay up.
Previously signed contracts don't count properly towards it. Not many British players went abroad in the 80s/90s when Spain and Italy paid much more money. I *would* have loved to travel and would have played in 5-6 different countries if I had the ability to kick a ball in roughly the right direction - but not many did and even fewer were successful.
In fairness Sunderland have been sending money they haven’t got on players they can’t afford for years. 70k a week for Rodwell. 4 million quid for Griggs. It’s good for them though pitched a bit too low imo.
Don’t mix up max wage and overall (squad) salary cap. You could in effect have 1 player in league one on £1m per year and the rest a share of the £1.5m. That is what the club can spend on Total wages. Not what you can offer individuals. If you have only £100k left in the pot. A player wishing to sign has the option to take it or leave it. Not demand more.
Just read article, figures include agents fees, so should be a lot of players ending up without agents and/or agents having to take a bit hit too. Question occurred to me , could a player set up a corporate company, charge for services and be omitted from this? It does say directly or indirectly so guess not
