@LASK_Official Player Dominik Frieser is expected to move to @barnsleyfc stand. It would not be the first Austrian that coach Gerhard is #Struber brings to the island ... #sollbauer , #ritzmaier and #schmidt could help with settling in ... @SkySportAustria#inundaut Lifted from Roland Streinz (Sky Sports Austria Reporter)
He's played for Struber at Wolfsberger AC. 26 year old midfielder. Around 200 career games, all in Austria.
Plays both wings according to this. Stats for last season don’t look that bad https://www.transfermarkt.com/dominik-frieser/leistungsdaten/spieler/273553
https://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=103679 Started last season with a dozen games without a goal and still managed to reach double figures by the end. Good effort that.
We need strength in depth, so he's not necessarily a replacement for anyone. It could mean that we're not going down the avenue of a big central striker though, if we're adding another wide striker, when we don't play a system with wingers in it.
Not that many games behind him to say he turns 27 in a couple of weeks. They’ve definitely torn up the s/s and method if we sign him. I’m not sure going that way is the right thing - we needed one or two older heads in key positions. I’m not sure we need to go and sign a nearly 27 year old right winger; we got Sollbauer who made the difference in that regard and he was definitely needed; but if he’s decent and the gaffer wants him, whatever - I just fear that means selling Brown, which again is fair, but there’s not likely to be much of a potential selling profit on a 27 year old and I’m not sure I support completely changing the approach, they just needed a bit of flexibility.
Does signing a 27 year old (assuming we do) mean we've tore up the spreadsheet and changed approach? Not sure it does tbh. One swallow does not a summer make. We have to wait and see who we sign/sell before we can make decisions like that
The last four signings if this comes off will be three older players (Sollbauer, Ritzmaier, now Frieser, all from Austria, not that it matters), and a youngster (Ludewig) on a half season loan. Neither of these types of signings were considered before. It isn’t only one swallow. Sollbauer was needed and they were very stubborn in not allowing any flexibility before. But they don’t need to completely change tack in my view - and the signs are there that they may be doing that. If they think it necessary to progress at this level, fine. But we need to stay afloat and selling one or two a year is generally how we do it. They don’t all have to be kids when they come in, but I’m not sure a wide area is somewhere I’d look to flood with experience. If this lad is signed I’ll support him, and I hope he’s brilliant, but I’d be more satisfied with a deeper lying midfield player (a cdm as the kids say) with a similar age and games played profile coming in and, if we need to bring in a right winger to replace Brown or add to the squad, a younger player with a fair few games behind him, be that from league one or two, Austria or anywhere else they want to look. Not up to me ultimately.
3 last season, to try and stay in the league. Which we did. We haven't signed or sold anyone for next season yet. So still too early to tell if we've ripped the spreadsheet up, if you ask me. Feel free to bump this thread though when we sign another four 28 year olds with Championship experience before the transfer window closes
