Just out of interest, but do you ever drive into the North? Just curious if there is a noticeable difference once you cross into UK territory.
Think there’s an element of truth in that as only when you are out on your own in a HGV do you really learn how to drive and get experience.
Defo, I never realised how poor the standard of driving generally was until I spent some time in a 12 tonne truck.
This sums up what's wrong with the world today, why on earth should an individual have to (or want to) drive 100,000 miles every year? Surely this is not necessary to operate our economy?
Middle lane and lane 3 my pet hate (the look of confusion on the old traditional middle lane drivers when roads evolved to 4 lanes. Priceless). If they are that scared and intimidated (fair play if they are) then the motorway is really not the place for them. Also - 4 lane motorways - all we do with road widening schemes is invite more traffic onto the road. A few £m on EDUCATION and ENFORCEMENT would prevent a few £b on ROAD WIDENING.. Also, also, 4 lane motorways. I fully appreciate that HGVs have as much right as anyone to be there, and are often the better drivers, but on a 4 lane motorway they should have been told first two lanes only. As it was.
Enjoy your toast/tea/bed/ tv/ windows / pretty much everything you’ve got/use. Think how you got it. Then ask the same question
I can understand this - I have had the same problem many times - a lot of them have a total aversion to the outside lane The other one that really annoys me -I set my cruise control so I am doing 70mph the number of times I try to overtake someone who then speeds up is incredibly frustrating - if you pull in behind them they slow down again -The alternative is to speed up to get past - about half the time this works OK with a small increasde but sometimes cars speed up to over 80 so either you have to seriously break the limit or drop in behind them - in either case they soon slow down to their original speed again Can anyone explain to me why you would speed up to make it harder for a car to pass you on a motorway
I think it is a psychological thing for some, as though you're making them feel inferior or something. I think a lot of the middle/4th lane hoggers is due to the same reason too. It is a status thing. I'm above driving in lane 1 etc... far too important for that. In Ireland they used to regularly have adverts on TV showing how to drive on motorways and what lanes 2+ are for. Not sure if they still do but this would be good on UK tv too.
I stayed in the North (nr Newry) for a week and did a day trip to Dublin. Only difference I can remember is the signs change from m/ph to km/ph. A sign indicates you are crossing the border (like when driving into Scotland from England for example). In terms of drivers/scenery there was no real difference from what I remember. Beautiful place. Churton is right, the driving experience is much better and calmer. On the way out of Dublin back north there was heavy traffic for some time, but the views made up for it.
I go up about once a year but mainly up the motorway from Dublin to Belfast. Again, it's pretty quiet. I regularly drive from Kerry to Dublin and on what's the main motorway from south to north i can at times be the only car on the road. It's bliss!
Was on M1 a few nights ago must have been 6/7 all in the middle lane & nothing in the nearside(apart from me) lane, why?
You ought to try the 5 lane sections of the M25 late at night its not at all uncommon to find a car sitting in lane 4 with 3 totally clear lanes inside it it means you need to decide whether to cross 5 lanes to pass or just undertake leaving 2 clear lanes between - which is by far the most sensible and probably safest but I think is also an offence - though I am not completely sure
There will be nothing in your house that wasn’t at one point delivered somewhere using an hgv. Long distance journeys, all day and night, are very necessary to keep the economy going. It would take years of planning and billions we don’t have to organise any change in this - and even then I’ve no idea how.
100K miles is a lot for an HGV though surely - if you assume 40 hours a week and you work for 46 weeks per year thats an average speed of 54.5mph. And takes no account of loading unloading times - times when not going flat out on the motorway etc -seems a bit too high to me
That plus personal driving though I can see being 100k miles a year. Driving to/from work, holidays, weekend outings etc.
So to overcome the possibility of encountering a selfish and bad driver, the solution is to drive badly and selfishly? The thread isn’t so much ‘I’m right and everybody else should get out of my way’. It’s more ‘the rules of the road include driving in the inside lane except for when overtaking’. That is the rule of the land, if everyone observed that properly, and observed all rules similarly, the roads would run much more effectively.
It’s the natural thing to do if you’re a nob head. it’s part of the mindset of some drivers who treat all roads as if they’re a queue. They’re the people who will never create a gap for you to change lane, who believe that doing so has allowed you to ‘push-in’. often quite aggressively too. the weird thing about them, likely to be female or ‘ordinary’ blokes in a Toyota Yaris or Corolla, Suzuki or similar.
I always pull into the left-hand lane and DO NOT hog the middle lane, I was simply saying that some people do it for the reason I suggested.
