The Highland Wildlife Park has exported Hamish the Polar bear south. He is just over 2 years old and had to be separated from his mother. It was that time to go it alone. Could be a replacement for Victor.
Hopefully they don’t get another lol polar bears surely aren’t supposed to be in Doncaster it’s cruel if you ask me
They’re here largely because it’s better than where they were. YWP started because a whole load of lions were holed up in tiny concrete cells in Eastern Europe. They were ‘rescued’ by someone from Donny who had land. The food bill led to entrance fees; and some involvement in other species breeding programs led us to here.
Wild polar bears move and cover an area of around 150,000 square km. It’s surely cruel to even breed them in captivity based on that? Its near on impossible to provide a polar bear with what it needs in a wildlife park like YWP in my eyes. I’m sure they get looked after as well as possible and I’m sure they live longer lives than wild ones too but I’m not sure it’s very fair, I’d argue that it’s less cruel to just put them down if they can’t survive in the natural habitat they always look depressed as hell whenever Iv see them in zoos
You're right but YWP isn't a zoo as such. It's there to give a better quality of life to animals that were in substandard zoo's or breeding programs. The polar bears are a good example. The enclosure they're in is over 10 acres in size which to put it into some perspective is the area of Oakwell including carparks. Polar bears are found in the wild in Canada where summer temperatures are in the 20s so the temperature and habitat of Doncaster isn't really out of the norm even if it seems strange to say.
Well this may lift your spirits https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-53874594 A little blinder.
