All this stuff happening in town sounds great. I can’t imagine how it will look when it is all done as I’ve never seen any of the plans and last time I was there it was just a bunch of shut up shops and barriers up everywhere.
Tinkey Winkey, Po, La La and Dipsey. Though I think it looks a lot better than either of the previous versions.
It's not perfect by any stretch, the solid block around the cinema looks poor imo but the majority of it looks great and you can't really compare it to what used to be there. Also they're building a new shopping 'street' that goes round the back of the market. Its around the width of the arcade and is covered with glass and will go from the corner f cheap side and the Alhambra heading behind the old meat and fish market then turning left and coming out somewhere around the old open market which looks really good too The photo below is from in the back corner (taken from somewhere near the old entrance ramp of the multistorey)
Where was the external screen supposed to go on the Alhambra? I can't really think of anywhere suitable for one. One simple thing that could make the side/back of the building look a lot better would be a big sign saying welcome to barnsley. Nothing fancy, just individual letters on the side of the building near the top. Not sure if I've got the angles right in my head but I think if it was in the right area it would be visible from the interchange so any visitors to the town would see it
I'm not sure because it's all being done in stages. Quite a lot of it is ready now, some of it looks like it will be ready by winter if I was guessing and some look around a year away. As for nudgers bridge. I reckon that will be finished when our owners go a whole month without a controversy
It was when they were planning to extend the Alhambra by adding a third level for the cinema and restaurants. This extra height to the building would’ve created enough space for the screen. Initial CGI’s suggested it would be placed on the part of the Alhambra facing Westway (between the Alhambra roundabout and Morrison’s Traffic Lights). Obviously all this got scrapped when Cineworld signed up to The Glassworks and made the scheme no longer viable. It was meant to be Spring 2021, but Covid has pushed it back slightly. The cinema, bowling and the restaurants should be open by next Summer hopefully. The bridge is meant to be in by December 2021. It all depends how quickly Yorkshire Water divert the sewers as that has to be done first. If you walk down Kendray Street at the minute there’s a purple line painted on the floor, this is the outline of where the bridge ‘lands’ on that side.
I've just looked at the planning application for the Alhambra and it actually had two big screens on it. One was facing the Alhambra roundabout and one was further along west way, opposite the John street carpark. They weren't going to be screens that people could really watch things on though, they were planned simply as large advertising boards showing the shops inside the Alhambra and advertising films that were showing etc. I've had a look at the design of a few other cineworlds and a few of them do seem to have screens on the front advertising films so we might end up with one of those
