Much being made of the possible move from Barca, Sorry but have listened to sports radio today and the butt kissing reporters have done my head in, lets be honest about this... This is not Messi who we all marveled at a few years ago, this is a 33 year old who at his peak would not have used a Premier league list to wipe his ar*e with. He was not only part of a team destroyed by Bayern while having little effect on the result, he is aware that a new manager is on his way who is already preparing to break up the squad that Messi has had around him for many years and that despite his influence in the past he will have little or no say in it in the future. If he is brought to the Premier league it will be for shirt sales, season tickets and merchandise reasons, sadly not to set the Prem alight as he did in Spain in the prime of his career. Also sadly if he does come here someone in a team will be moved to make way, imagine if this is say Fodden at city, a young talented player or similar at Utd...I for one have no desire to see that. My bet is that the likes of Bayern or Liverpool won't entertain him and they are the bench mark at the moment in Europe and England. I loved him at his peak and being old enough to have watched world cups with Pele, Maradona, Cruyff and MOTD with Best, think he may have been the greatest player ever, stay at Barca till ya retire.. Just my opinion, am sure some will disagree.
I wouldn't want him over here. His best days are behind him and his wage demands were bonkers even before Covid was a thing. I would hate for him to stunt the growth of Rashford/Greenwood for the England team by taking the place of one of them. He could go to Man City they have enough old guys in their team.
I agree - probably wouldn't want him playing for my team. I'll admit to being intrigued as to how he'd get on in the Premiership though, so there's a part of me which does hope that the likes of Chelsea or City stump up the cash to pay him.
Purely from a footballing point of view would he be value for money ?, the transfer fee will be huge, his wages will be huge, can one player really make that much of a difference?, there is the commercial side of course..
Or conversely the Fodens, Rashfords etc could learn from the master craftsman and come on leaps and bounds.I think he still has plenty to give personally but not sure he ll end up in England.
It's been reported that Juve are looking to move Ronaldo on due to his massive wage so I doubt they would lump Messi's €600K a week aswell tbh.
I share this thought now, especially since VAR was introduced. My big issue with Messi coming to the premier league would be sky. Look how they embarrassed themselves with Rooney signing for derby. Can you imagine what they’ll be like with Messi? I loved watching Messi and think he’s the greatest of all time, and the chance to see my team play against him in a cup completion would be amazing. But I just think sky will give him that much coverage to the point it makes your toes curl and it’ll put me off him. For that reason I hope he doesn’t come here.
You reckon a team who have probably already sold a fair few of this season's shirts are going to sell over a million Messi shirts?
Reminder that last season Messi scored 31 goals and got 26 assists in 44 games across all competitions. He might not be quite at his peak but they're still incredible numbers. For comparison, Sadio Mane, who many thought was the best attacking player in the Prem last year, got 22 goals and 12 assists in 47 games.
Potentially. He's that big a deal. How many people wear Barcelona shirts with his name on the back, that aren't necessarily Barcelona fans.
Messi would wipe the floor with the Premier league, even at 33. He's far from finished, and whilst his best years are probably behind him, he's still comfortably the 2nd best player in the world in my opinion. He'll go to PSG mind. They hoover up all of the expensive talent.
It would be interesting to see how he’d get on in the premier league. No offence to The Spanish league but outside the top 4-5 it’s pretty average, he’d be playing better teams more regularly in the premier league and the pace would be quicker. Still think he’d get goals of course, but not sure he’d break any records.
My money is on China, Qatar or the USA. One of the leagues with some big money behind it - and Qatar has the world cup coming up. A lot depends on if he has retired from international football or wants one last big tournament for Argentina.
Much of the Premier League is dross these days with Newcastle finishing 13th with Steve Bruce in charge! I don't follow La Liga to be honest so couldn't describe the standard outside the top 4 but can't imagine they'd be much worse than some of the Prem teams. Possibly the 5th - 10th section of the league is stronger in England.
