Whenever I read time travel stories, there's always somebody going back in time to try and change something important - kill Hitler or something like that. Personally I don't think I'd make it any further back than our corner shop, circa 1970.
Lived on New Street, Great Houghton & had 3 corner shops within apart 120 yards. Brilliant times, also a fish shop, pie n pea van.
Kids of late 80s can you remember Nerdz? Brightly coloured sour things, possible made from waste products from the Manhattan Project.
McCowans slabs of toffee is that the one with the cow on it,used to weld your jaws together when you chewed it.
I think they were called Spanish as the recipe originated in Spain. I’ve found some on my travels through Spain in some of the local markets and shops. I used to like those black liquorice oar shaped sweets. I used to get them from the tobacconist in shambles street opposite the town hall. I think it’s Russel Eaton now. The shop was all old fashioned wooden panelled and sold baccy and pipes...
I never see Old Jamaica any more, although they had a revival a while back. I seem to remember when they launched it there were three different bars. I think one was orange, but I can't remember the other, but I'd like to find some Old Jamaica.
Does anyone else remember the chewy cigarette sweets, think they bay have been pear flavoured? And when slush puppies first came out, I lived the grape and cherry flavours. Now it just seems to be raspberry or bubblegum flavours.
I was bought a bar of Bournville Old Jamaica for my birthday a fortnight ago. Not sure if that's the same?
