The recent post about San Francisco got me thinking about Reds spread around the world. This board is a great resource for those of us who not only don't live in Barnsley anymore but not even in the UK. We can't get to games so we rely on this board for game reviews and player evaluations. What places around the world are represented here? I'm here in China, and formally known as Mexico Tyke. (and also lived in LA for two years). What do the oversees crew miss about life back home, if anything. I've not lived in Barnsley since I was 16 so my fond memories are of things that don't exist much these days. like scouring Cash Converters for old martial arts movies on VHS. Other than this board how do oversees fans keep up and do you still get back to see games when you can? It's surprising how many Barnsley fans exist around the world. Considering how small a place we think it is. When I lived in London there was a prominent ex-Barnsley resident in the field that i work in. He was simply known as 'Barnsley' and everyone knew him as such. Whenever I say thats where I'm from, its always greeted with a fake impression of the accent - 'Baaaaaarnsley'. Barnsley is a remarkable place. When you leave it always stays with you.
I did live in Reading for 23 years and still had a season ticket. That was during the promotion and Premier League season as well. I missed only 1 game home and away, during the 96/97 & 97/98 seasons, which was the Wednesday PL away game on the Monday night Sky game. Blackburn away on a Tuesday night was interesting! I think I got back home at 4 o'clock in the morning , back up for work at 6.30! Happy days, wouldn't change a single thing if I could do it again
I'm always interested to see where in the world other fans are. I left the UK in 1999 and since then I have lived in Berlin, Kathmandu and now Tbilisi. I've probably been to more Boxing Day games over the last 20 years than any other fixtures!
St Petersburg, Russia for 16 years. Miss cheddar cheese, British spring and autumn (but summer and winter are much nicer here), Oakwell, my friends and family. But as I'm only a short, cheap flight away and the digital world means keeping in touch is easy, I never feel isolated, and pre-covid we'd come back 2-3 times every year. The current situation is very disheartening, we've already ditched two sets of air tickets.
Adelaide, South Australia for the past twelve years. I miss dry roasted peanuts and proper Yorkshire fish and chips. I occasionally miss the British seasons but then I remember that what I'm missing, postcard images of lambs bouncing between spring daffodils and red and gold autumn trees isn't actually what spring and autumn look like... grey, damp, cold and dark. This forum and Tykes TV are my window in on Barnsley (the club and the town) so I appreciate them a lot. After reading this forum my other half says my accent returns. Proper ripper!
Ni hao! I am in Singapore , been here since 2008. Arrive here via Bridgend --》 Crolles -》Manchester. Since I been in Singapore its been a bit tricky attending games, now though cannot even go Malaysia let alone UK. Kept my online name from my time in France as its kinda cool!!
Oh yes, proper fish and chips. Though I can make it pretty well at home, it's not the same as from a chippy.
Not wishing to make you guys envious but I live an hour from Scarborough and Filey, we’re there most weekends at our caravan (is that a thing so much abroad ?) and therefore have fresh fish with chips covered in lashings of salt and vinegar on a regular basis. !! I used iFollow at the end of the season with no issues and I’ve just paid a tenner for tomorrows game, don’t know if it’s something you can subscribe to where you are ?
I am currently in Cyprus on dry land but generally live on my sailboat and have been all around the Mediterranean for the last 2 years. Prior to that I was in British Columbia, Arizona, Tennessee and Alberta after leaving UK in 2003. Before that I was in the Army and traveled a lot of the world during that career. I started life in Wath and was introduced to watching Barnsley by my uncle. These days I get to a game every year or two but watch almost every game on iFollow and enjoy reading this board for the football info and all of the other conversations that we have. My accent is long gone.....
My accent still going strong.... its my sentence construction thats gone out the window since I been in Singapore.
Until tother year my brother ( old poster DJ Fattyboy) lived on the Southern Right tip on the coast in Dunedin on NZs south island. That's got to a record distance from Oakwell?!? There's still my cousin there and a few more exiled Reds.
This thread is amazing! What made you all move to these far away places? Russia, Utah, Signapore, Filey.. I'm in my 20s and lived in Barnsley from 11 til 23. I live in the midlands now and can't fathom the amount of planning and work involved in moving abroad, especially if you go from country to country.. I visited family in Australia last year and got up at 3AM to watch the Reds play on iFollow. Stoke 4 - Barnsley 2. Lovely. I can't imagine the disappointment of waking up regularly in the middle of the night to watch the reds get thrashed haha!
My older sister has been in Calgary, Canada for 20 years - (Calgary Tyke - doesn’t post anymore) . She’s been back several times at Christmas and for Play Off Finals etc. She once saw a man in Calgary in a BFC shirt, and so got talking to him .... they are now friends, (Freezing Tyke) and actually had Brendan O’Connell around for Dinner one night. Brendan coaches for Calgary Blizzards. As it happened, Stahlrost was in town at the time, so he joined their very select ex- Oakwell gathering.
That Wednesday game was my first away match. We'd not been able to get tickets, but my uncle, who's a Wednesday season ticket holder, couldn't get to the game so we used his and my cousins ticket. My dad forgot we were in the Wednesday end when Redfearn slammed that free kick home Nobody battered an eyelid, except for this one old dear, sat in front of us, Sheffield Wednesday denim jacket and matching owl earrings. Shouting for the stewards. Luckily nothing came of it, but it soured my first away match experience; made even worse of course by the manner in which we lost the game.
