Youngest daughter woke up Friday morning with what appears to be a common cold. She had a high temperature, cough, and generally felt like ***** but that could’ve been down to tiredness as well. Wife rang school and asked if any others had called in with similar. School said there appears to be quite a few with cold symptoms. Wife said she is reluctant to send her to school and asked their advice. School said it’s up to you have to do what you think is best. To an extent that’s fair enough. Anyway, wife called 111 and they advised all household to book a Covid test. I was called at work and came home. Initially I tried to book all family a test, but couldn’t get an available site. Called the number on the website and they advised to keep trying as it releases available slots periodically through the day, oh and maybe just book the person with the symptoms a test. Eventually got a test for me and daughter and we are now awaiting results in isolation. Sister law called says 2 of her kids have cold but carried on going to school and are not self- isolating as it’s just a cold. I’m just fed up that all my family’s plans are cancelled this weekend, including taking eldest daughter back to University in Manchester. Whilst others just simply go about their business. We are erring on the side of caution with what appears to be a cold, yet others carry on regardless.

This is one of the biggest problems. Those who are more cautious and considerate risk losing out the most.

You did the right thing mate, if others followed your lead and weren’t as careless when it comes to Covid then we might have been in a better position as a country.

But instead we’ve got people telling us to focus on the deaths Instead of cases and comparing it to flu constantly, and this is what we are up against.

It’s not the losing out per se, it’s the inconsistency

Bit of both really. Not necessarily for you (I don't know your circumstances) but for some less well off people they risk losing hundreds of pounds to stay at home just in case whilst they see their workmates take risks and don't lose out financially.

The inconsistency is just crazy too. We've got people slagging others off for wanting less restrictions and then going to the pub themselves. We've got people who wanted less restrictions avoiding pubs. People staying home all the time, people going shopping daily. People coughing once and locking themselves away for a month and people at death's door dragging themselves to work.

And honestly I'm not sure what the solution is to get more consistence but you're right it's absolutely crap without it

Decent recompense for those who need to self isolate.

The real problem is the testing and track and trace is still not working - despite the lies the ministers tell us real capacity is still not reliably at 100k per day and we have far more than that wanting tests for reasons such as yours
If you could get a test and results in 48 hours like you should be able to there really wouldnt be a problem - if your daughter really has got Covid I am sure you would have no problem isolating - its the fact that you are almost sure she hasnt that is rightly annoying you.

Its hard to exagerate just how badly the government has managed this pandemic - latest example the laws that came into force at midnight last night were finally published at 23:35 - 25 minutes before they came in - not only that a lot of it is incomprehensible as mentioned by most legal experts who have had a quick look at them. Its almost as if the government want people to break the law

Me n my lad have been the same. Coughing and snotty so we went for tests, both negative.
I personally think it’s down to wearing masks. Recycling your own germs etc

We re entering into cold season. I often get a sore throat and temperature with a cold. And a cough. A difficult call to make.

Aren't you just describing life? Some people go out, some people stay in. Some people go to work/school if they've got a bit of a tummy bug others don't. You're never going to get consistency.

Cold season is going to be carnage. I mean for every sniffle if you have any care for others you are going to have to get a test and isolate. And as yoU day others don’t bother and we will just go spinning round in circles.

Since I started perpetual hand washing, sanitizing and trying to social distance as much as possible I’ve not had the usual sniffle and or sore throat. Hoping this continues into winter because it seems to be working so far.

I thought cold symptoms were different to Covid - Runny nose in particular is a significant difference also Colds rarely start with a continuous cough
I think if I got classic cold symptoms I would wait a day or so before deciding it could be covid - though I would probably isolate for a couple of days until I was sure. I suppose one problem is a bad cold also affects your sense of smell and taste though. Again if testing worked as it should by now getting a local test and results in a couple of days wouldnt be a huge problem.

yeah some of the symptoms are overlapping temperature / sense of smell / sore throat. The testing system won’t cope.

Interesting post regarding symptoms. I had no symptom other than a headache at the start (I did not know this was the start). Woke up with a very bad headache which is not unusual for me. However went to work and it would not shift. This continued up till I went to bed and then bang! It was like a switch had been turned on.
So no cough, runny or blocked nose nor a discernable loss of smell and taste at this point.
Just a headache as a (pre) symptom.

    100% agree.

And what makes it worse, is the money they have thrown at their cronies in the private sector, with nothing positive to show for it is criminal. Yet in 4 years, they'll tell us that a Labour Government would bankrupt the country. If the money thrown at Serco at gone to local health authorities to contain the spread within their areas, we'd have a functioning test, trace and isolate system now. There'd probably even be some left over to provide financial support for those that have to miss work because of the need to self isolate.

Or maybe they could've used the money from the numerous contracts for PPE that never resulted in any PPE.

Or maybe the money spent on Eat out to help out, which in my opinion, was the equivalent of standing outside a turnstile and giving away free match tickets to people that were approaching with the admission price in their hand.
