Scotland have been open for about three weeks - if Liverpool anything to go by then I can see schools opening as a contributing factor. Several schools already with confirmed cases - my friend's school has had 5 cases , my partner's school plus two further schools I work in. That's at least 20 cases in just in one city.

    I really don't know.

What has changed recently is more people going back to work, schools opening, people ignoring social distancing as they believe masks make them invincible. More testing?

I'm not suggesting that pubs and restaurants haven't contributed as there will be establishments who haven't imposed any of the guidelines.

    I will digress.

I wasn't working on Friday and I took my granddaugter for a walk in her pushchair. I walked past the local primary school, it was playtime.

The kids were doing what kids do, playing tig, running around chasing each other and generally having a good time. It was lovely and the most normal thing I'd seen in months.

Then I thought of the possible transmission of virus through the kids to parents and the teachers (my daughter is a teacher).

What to do? close everything down again ? open everything up?

    As I stated, I really don't know.

    Sorry for rambling on.

    Dave

610 schools nationwide had reported outbreaks to last Friday (not sure if that is England. England&Wales or whole UK but its bad in any way) including at least 9 in South Yorkshire.

Great to hear some kids are having a sense of normality. It must have been horrible for some children.

The daily You Gov poll and two thirds would support another lockdown like we had at the start. Crazy.

Final weighted results published at the end of day.

Would you support or oppose a second national lockdown, similar to that in April and May, in the event that coronavirus cases were to continue to rise?

    Strongly support 35%
    Somewhat support 33%
    Somewhat oppose 12%
    Strongly oppose 15%
    Don't know 4%

That follows the Govts own advice though doesn’t it? if the R rate is above 1 then they would reset lockdown. It’s little wonder people are confused.

People who attend school also catch pandemic illness = must have caught it at school.
You need to work on your logic

What logic? I pointed out the number of cases already in Liverpool since last week. The numbers testing positive increase the number of cases recorded. Never commented on where it was caught just the numbers.

1 hospital death today. We nearly got our first covid free day. Seems the perfect day for more restrictions on our freedoms.

You literally said schools opening was a contributing factor - the fact is most schools have been open a week and we’ve been setting numbers over 1k a day since mid August when Scottish schools opened. There is zero evidence that the current rate of infection has anything to do with schools!!

Whatever the reason for the increase in infections, thankfully it's not seen a spike in deaths at every stage of something more being opened.

The Nando's Scale that they brought out a while back said that if the R Rate is above 1 then we're back in full lockdown. It's currently estimated at 1.7 (I think).

This would imply that we're in stage 4 - lockdown required. But we're acting like we're in Stage 1 (team sports, vulnerable out in public etc).

It would be really handy if I could post a picture of that scale, but I'm really thick so I can't.

Also, I'm not advocating a return to lockdown before anyone piles on. I come in peace.

Because when 1 gets tested you tend to find the other parents get their children tested. There were 4 cases in my friends class - three had no symptoms and only found out as a result someone was tested. 3 there that wouldn't have been tested otherwise. I suspect that the numbers will increase with full schools - most were half empty from June. At least 10 schools I know of in the area with outbreaks

But the faster it spreads, the more difficult it becomes to protect the vulnerable. SAGE believe that cases are now doubling every 6-7 days. Hospitalisations and deaths are sadly likely to increase. It is already starting to happen in the North West.

Lockdown should be avoidable with proper processes and systems in place. As well as a proper test, trace and isolate, other suggestions have been put forward like financial support for people required to isolate, safety certificates for Covid-Secure environments in hospitality sector being examples mentioned today.

Doubt the government will shell out furlough again so it will never work another lockdown.
