Some buildings ,buisnesses etc making it compulsory to download before you can enter ie Metrodome is one .

I thought businesses were struggling for custom but obviously not if they can penalise the millions who either don't want a smartphone or don't have one compatible with the app like it appears many people do. Giving your name and number upon entering a building should be enough. Then to make sure a real number has been given the pub can ring the number given and the customer show their phone to show they have got the call.

I’d have thought so too tbh but that’s what I was told this morning ,
I don’t take me my phone when going to the Metrodome anyways so not sure how that will Pan out.
Probably be a few implications and retractions before they get it right I suppose but as you say a few don’t have them but they have been taking bookings via apps and confirming them at reception with their phones as I’m not sure if paying by cash is an option as not seen anyone do it .

Going to wait, my main concern is whether my data is safe. Its doesnt fill me with confidence the kind of people this cabinet deals with.

What could go wrong. Dido Harding is leading the contact tracing initiative, and she has an excellent record when it comes to protection of people's data.

That seems a bit over the top - not everyone has a smartphone that the app works on
I thought the government rules were every relevant business had to have the QR code displayed
If people use the app thats all thats needed but if not the business records the name and contact details

What happens if you dont have a up to date smartphone are you barred from going in - thats going to cost a lot of lost business and annoy a lot of people

It says on their website either scan the QR code or download the app. I'm going to use my QR scanner if I can.

Does it work entirely through bluetooth or does it need a data connection as well?

Allegedly the data is only stored on your phone - no identifyable data is passed to central government - all they have is the first part of your post code so they have some geograhical information - That is fair enough. If they have lied on this it would be a political lie even the Tories couldn't ride out so I am inclined to believe this

My issue is that in the trials in the IOW approx 1/3rd of people the app asked to isolate were erroneously told to do so.
Bearing in mind that's 2 weeks effective house arrest with no chance of parole - unless you do get covid and recover - that is a concern
if I have genuinely been exposed to Covid I will happily isolate but wouldnt want to have to do it due to a faulty app

It needs a data connection - but all the major phone operators have agreed to exempt data used by the app from any charges

I think the lass on reception will have got it wrong but I didn’t question her as I was in a rush tbh .
But as I say I don’t take my phone so not sure what implications are .
I’ll take it for the quiet life tbh but don’t like the idea me and phones near water dont mix tbh .

You need to do both. You download the app and then when you visit somewhere scan the QR code into the app.

Which is why I find it strange that any business would bar entry
Good articles in the Mirror and Guardian on it
    https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/nhs-coronavirus-app-only-works-22733773
even new phones havent been tested if they arent iphones Samsung Google etc - eg my Mrs has a Motorola which is less than 6 months old and its not listed
