Flying winger in Cheltenham colours. We should have gone in for him :).

Look at the size of our squad. I remember reading in the Cheltenham Echo at the time how envious they were that we could field star forwards like Bruce Dyer and Mike Sheron. Our "stars" proved too much for them that night with a 3-1 victory achieved.

I was standing behind the goal with two other local friends under a "Gloucester Reds" flag. It was weird going there as an away supporter when I had been so many times supporting the home side.

Looking at our squad I can't believe we only survived that season in stoppage time vs Brentford ;)

I was there that night also. I remember saying to my Cheltenham Town supporting mate that Tony Naylor always scores against us ....and he did within the first ten minutes to prove the point. Greg Strong was on loan to Town from Hull City (I think) and he made a blooper which let in Mike Sheron for our equaliser and then goals from Bruce Dyer and Gary Jones won us the game comfortably. Gary Jones' goal was late on, but had a touch of Redfearn about it ....good exchange of passes, driving on into the box, crashing shot into the corner past the keeper. Worst thing that night ....terrible meat pie at half time. What little filling there was spilled on to my coat, which always looked a mess afterwards, but I could point to the smudge and recall the 3-1 victory, which made it worthwhile. Bitterly cold as well.

I think Naylor scored in the Oakwell game as well, our first home game of the season. I travelled up on one of the 2 or 3 supporters coaches. My travelling companions were thrilled with the point taken off such a big club like Barnsley.

You're right, it was a cold night at Whaddon Road and that end was open to the elements

My wife's Mum (sadly no longer with us) was from Cheltenham and Father-in-Law (from Barnsley, obviously) used to take the right old Mickey with her side of the family about "lack of football" in Cheltenham, as they were a non-league team for ages.

He missed the games with Cheltenham (as he passed away long before) and my wife said that her Dad would be turning in his grave the day we played Cheltenham at home. He never would have believed it...

I could hardly believe it myself after years of Second Division for us and years in the Southern Premier and Conference for the Robins. I started watching both Gloucester City and Cheltenham Town when I got posted to RAF Innsworth near Gloucester in 1986. I remember one memorable night at City's ground, Meadow Park, when about 3,000 packed the tiny but neat, modern stadium for the visit of the noisy neighbours from just up the A40. Gloucester ran them ragged (I think it was an FA Cup tie) and a few RAF colleagues took my advice and accompanied me to the match for their first taste of non-league football. They couldn't believe the quality of football on show, and the electric, local derby atmosphere.

Sadly Gloucester's fortunes turned sour when they lost their new ground to constant flooding (some idiot thought building on a flood plain right next to the Severn was a good idea o_O) and a thriving little club went backwards. Conversely Cheltenham were on the rise and obviously made it to the Football League and even to the giddy heights of the Third Division where they could play giants like Barnsley! When the fixture list pitted us against them first home game of the season it was logical that I should take the afternoon off work and get myself down to Whaddon Road and onto a supporters bus for the trip up the M5. Disappointing evening though - a 1-1 draw was not what I was expecting!

As far as I can remember, he never played a league game for us and was released by the club at a young age. Although I believe he played for Penistone Church.

Thanks for the info. I had a look in teh Who's Who of Barnsley FC book and he isn't in there. Bit surprised that he got the number 3 shirt in that case, if he'd been number 53 I wouldn't have bothered asking.
