Not really though? There's a huge difference between his agent contacting clubs to get him a move away from Barnsley vs. clubs with managerial vacancies contacting his agent to see what the situation is/was.
But if he wanted to stay, surely he would immediately reply thanks but no thanks? And if he wanted to leave then it's absolutely not an issue as these things happen in football, but don't string things along and potentially jeopardise his current employers.
That's a different discussion though isn't it? People are claiming his agent speaking to other clubs is Struber trying to force a move away but nothing confirms that to have been the case. He might have told his agent to say 'thanks but no thanks' to every club up until Red Bull? Still means his agent has been speaking to clubs. I think the language barrier is often forgotten here. I'm not sure some of the quotes people pick up on would be worded as they are in someone's native tongue.
Agree it's a different discussion. But IMO if he is in discussions with other clubs, then he isn't 100% focussed on us - so I think criticism is fair. This has been in the open for at least 10 days now - I would have hoped it would have been resolved by now.
I think this current 'thing' with Red Bull is totally separate and my opinion on that is a bit indifferent. I think he's definitely leaving, but maybe getting to the International Break was in our best interests? Only people at the club know that for sure. Three points or a good performance at Boro would help support that. Nothing suggests he's been in 'discussions with other clubs' though. That's the main point I'm talking about. We seem to have taken a quote about his agent speaking with teams and evolved it in to Struber wanting his agent to get him a way out of Oakwell.
If his agent is 'Speaking with teams' then I'm pretty sure that involves 'discussions with other clubs'. To suggest not is incredibly naive - IMO of course.
Naturally your opinion. I get that. Where as my mind just thinks that's an agent fielding queries from clubs as oppose to actual discussions or someone actively trying to get a move - based on what we know. He might have been to be fair, but nothing suggests that. In proper layman's terms. If someone approaches your friend/boss/family member and asks if you're single. That would be them approaching you as oppose to the other way round.
Yeah I see your point. But as I'm married, if someone approached me I wouldn't tell my wingman to speak with the other woman and see if I could work out a deal whilst trying to continue my marriage to the best of my ability. I apologise btw, that's probably the worst analogy I've ever made.
Watford to agent Is Gerhard up for the job? Agent I ll ask him Gerhard no way Jose' Agent to Watford nah mate Is this the kind of thing you mean Ben!?
Response A: "Nahh sorry, he's attached and happily so. Hard luck love." Response B: "He isn't single at the moment but he's willing to start a new relationship. Let's speak some more about what you could offer in comparison to his current missus as I'd be glad to outline what he expects from a girlfriend and see whether you'd be a suitable match. What are you drinking?" Which of the above constitutes 'speaking to'? Which of the above would example man's missus say is a rather irksome conversation that mugs her off a bit?
More like this. Which is as realistic, based on what any of us actually know, than some of the negative comments now being made. Watford: As you probably know we've got a position at Vicarage Road and we're exploring our options. What's the situation with Gerhard Struber? Agent: He's obviously just achieved the impossible in keeping Barnsley in the Championship, so he's back in Austria having some family time right now. He's on a three year contract but there is a minimum fee release clause to get him out of that Watford: How substantial is the release fee? Agent: To the tune of £1.8m Watford: Is that clause watertight? Any negotiations to be had? Agent: Watertight. As you'd expect, Barnsley don't want to lose him and want to build. Gerhard is happy at Barnsley, but as with most people is always interested in hearing about opportunities Watford: Good to know. We'll be in touch.
This is all based on assumptions and evolving the quotes we've heard in to a potential scenario. It might have happened like either, but in plain black and white and what we know, Struber hasn't discussed anything with any clubs
My take on it is he is leaving and he and the club have come to an agreement not to leave until after the Middlesbrough game. That’s based purely on opinion granted and I don’t have an answer to why not announce before either.
I think we are being tiny bit nieve if we actually believe any agent is not constantly trying to better their clients by talking to other clubs. You can hide behind a play on words all you like but it happens ALL the time.
Yeah it seems that way. It's just a royal pain for it to drag on how it has - and I hope it doesn't cost us a result.
That actually made me laugh! ;-) For some reason it sounded like it should have been delivered by Kenneth Wolstenholme. No idea why, but it amused me anyway. If any "talks" went beyond "he's under contract, talk to Barnsley" then its tapping up in my view. The only reason to approach an agent is to start the ball rolling and if the club who contracted him isn't informed at that point, then that dialogue is aiming to engineer a move. Of course illegal talks go on all the time, but it doesn't make it right, nor should we shy away from admitting that's whats gone on when the individual has just admitted it of his own free volition.
We've just got differing opinions on that then mate. If you're just confirming how the land lies then there's nothing wrong with going to the person who represents the player/manager - providing that's all your doing. It's also so common, and we've no doubt done it ourselves, that it's difficult to take umbrage with it. We can't all complain about the annoying undisclosed transfer fees, when we all know agents and clubs talk to each other, and then get annoyed that agents and clubs talk to each other
It could all be solved by making fees transparent and making agents fee based, paid for by their clients. I cant see any reason at all why a manager would need an agent at all. And if they want guidance of law, speak with a solicitor, and if finance, a financial advisor. I just don't think we can be naive to intentions of managers and players and defend them when they openly state theyve been talking to other clubs either directly, or by proxy. We can all invent any form of conversation that may or may not have gone on. What we do know for certain is Struber, through his agent, but his own admission, has been talking to clubs (plural) for months. And if he had no intention of leaving, those "talks" would never occur would they? Sadly, its another aspect of football which isn't governed adequately, probably because it adds to the drama and razzmatazz the sporting media seem so intent on feeding us.
