I don’t remember being overly excited when we signed Galvin, certainly not in the way I was when we had signed Clarke the year before. More intrigued I think wasn’t impressed after the first couple of games either

If we're not talking people who were clearly on the way down and we were looking for players who were going to improve then it's probably Hume

Had a certain amount of interest in us signing an attacking midfield player from Celtic, who had outscored a certain Kenny Dalglish a few seasons before.

No You Tube then so don’t think many had seen much of him to know quite what to expect.

Early performances were a bit underwhelming, in that it appeared we hadn’t signed the all-action tough-tackling midfielder we were expecting.

However, I think it’s fair to say he more than made up for it. In over 50 years of watching the Reds, no-one comes close.

What on earth were they serving in that club, Kev?

Pughie was a good player and much more than just a hard man, but it sounds like the old bloke must have found the ale a bit too strong for him.

Hourihane, Winnall, Mawson, Hammill, Woodrow in recent times.

a bit further Back Da Silva, Vaz Te,

further back still Hignett and Ward.

    Probably loads I’ve missed.

signing players hasn’t been the problem keeping them is.

    If we don't count loans,

Probably Mowatt, he's no conor but he is quality. We've had a lot of good players who I wouldn't consider quality signings, especially as lots were punts that worked out

Hammill second time round is pretty much the only one. I was buzzing to go watch us play when he rejoined.

There’s been plenty of others I got excited about once I’d seen them play for us such as McBurnie. Turned up looking like he was out of Trainspotting with his socks round his ankles & then dribbled past 3 Sheff Wednesday players & scored on his debut. Brilliant

"Galvin"? Bloody hell, Dave, are you going all Derek Dougan on us?:D
For what it's worth, everyone I knew who were Barnsley fans were overjoyed that we were signing a player who'd been a first team regular at Celtic for years, even outscoring Kenny Dalglish during Dalglish's last campaign there. Obviously, we then got the self appointed experts & Graham Pugh fans who were insisting that we'd signed a waste of space that first month of the 1979/80 season.

I can’t say I remember being overjoyed. Not like I was when we signed Clarke. Dont get me wrong I wasn’t disappointed either but I didn’t know how well it would work out. After the first month I was starting to have doubts but hadn’t written him off. Turned out he wasn’t a bad signing after all.

I’m forgetting Mido. Embarrassingly I got very excited by him joining. Once I’d seen him in his sports bra at Rotherham & on the exercise bike in our dugout I quickly realised he’d flop.

Heard an interview with Jim O’Brien recently talking about him saying he was a great lad who trained hard & they couldn’t understand why he wasn’t shifting the weight but then he saw all the takeaway rubbish in his car & realised he wouldn’t stop eating *****

Bonnie Galvin wasn’t fit and about a one and a half stone overweight when he first arrived in tarn. Quickly made up for it though

With regards to football, there's always been individuals who like to be 'different' to others. They wear it like a badge of honour. You can guarantee that if a player is popular with the fans, they're the ones who these experts will overtly criticise. If you then question their viewpoint, it'll be pointed out that your footballing knowledge is inferior to theirs, as it shouldn't need explaining why their opinions (often presented as factual statements) hold greater credence than those of their detractors.
    'Twas ever thus.:D
