I'm not really understanding this. Fair enough if you have a specific one in mind but just to be English, why?
For me it’s because I’d like us to recruit from the British market again. A British coach has better knowledge of L1/L2 players whilst a European coach would understandably prefer to recruit from a market he knows best.
But supposedly it isn't the coach recruiting the players, so what difference would a British coach make over a foreign coach then?
I’d like Paul Cook if it were my choice but I know there’s not a chance of that happening. For one I doubt he’d consider working under the system of our owners and for another I doubt we could afford him. The Flynn guy at Newport would also be a good choice.
Fair comment. Well I suppose a British coach would be more likely to champion the talent in our own lower leagues rather than that in countries such as Austria!
Doesn't have to be English for me but I think it would help if they're based here, for two reasons: 1. They are more likely to have a deeper understanding of opposition teams and players. Yes, I know we'll have people watching upcoming opponents but I think understanding their strengths is different from having watched them several times and ideally having experienced playing against them previously. For example, it was entirely predictable how Stoke would play against us at their place after lockdown and yet we seemed to be surprised / unprepared for it. 2. I think we need some continuity. It would be good to have a manager stay for 2/3/4 seasons. And I think the likelihood of that happening increases if it's someone who is based here rather than someone who is abroad and just comes here for the job. The fact neither Stendel nor Struber (not Morais as far as I'm aware) brought their family with them illustrated to me that they probably weren't here for the long term. If it does turn out to be another coach from the continent I think we should insist that their family come with them and settle here and whilst I suspect that lots would then rule themselves out I'd argue that'd be a good thing.
Of course and I wouldn’t want to rule out the odd overseas recruit. However, I’m sure you’d agree that the best players we’ve brought in over the past 5/6 years have come from our own lower leagues?
I'm not sure you could insist on their moving their family, particularly as their children are likely to be secondary aged. Stendel for example couldn't have lived much closer to the club and probably gave more time to it due to not having family around? I agree I'd love continuity but it doesn't seem to me something we're going to get any time soon. And as fans we need to accept that if we want continuity then we cant clamour for a manager to go if results dont go our way.
I'm not sure I'd feel happy with us insisting someone brings their family over if we recruited from abroad, particularly in a pandemic (even more so when you look how badly we've managed it). If the owners want to maintain a pressing style (even though there are clearly varying systems that sit within that catch all style), the likelihood is it will be a younger coach or a continental coach. We'll get what we'll get to be honest. Could be crazy, could be considered. Who knows.
1) British managers know British Football better as they have lived it for years. 2) They don't have to fly abroad regularly to see the family they have left behind who haven't joined them here. 3) Our team is less likely to be filled with many players who don't know how to play the English game as they have no EFL experience.
Some have come from our own lower leagues but not all - Woodrow was hardly lower league, Solbauer came from abroad also some of our best players if you go back 5/6 years were actually loans from higher clubs but hardly likely to be scouted by the head coach
Newport - good to see a club that's had ups and downs doing well - at one time when out of the FL they were playing their matches at Moreton-in-Marsh 80+miles away. Because of the distance from Newport to Moreton the club acquired the nickname The Exiles. Mike Flynn doing brilliantly as manager - he's Newport born and bred.
I don’t really care where a manager comes from but if there’s even the vaguest chance that Paul Cook wants the job we should snap how hand off
I, too, would be happy to see the likes of Mike Flynn, Chris Hughton, Darren Moore or Paul Cook being appointed. I doubt any of them will, though.
Oh absolutely, and I do think the way forward is for us to pluck the best players out of league 1 and 2. But I'd want to get the best players from wherever they're based.
I don't mind personally as long as they bring good results etc. But given current circumstances I would personally like us to appoint a British based manager who is out of work (my choice being Paul Cook) that knows this league and know knows the British market well who could come in immediately and get a few signings in from UK market before the window shuts. The current favourite is Hannes Wolf (according to social media) he has a good background and seems a good pick, but IMO we need someone who could come in and get a few signings in quick to help strengthen the side. Anyone we sign now has to be based in UK so a UK based manager seems the best idea currently.
