Exactly this. I am always confounded how the Republicans and Democrats battle over a particular policy but the controlling party block another one e.g. the budget using it as leverage to blackmail the other into accepting the former one in the full knowledge that it blocking or delaying a decision, especially the budget has a disastrous effect on a huge swathe of the general population. American politics are baffling when you consider they believe themselves to be a fully 'democratic' society and nation. Whatever we think about UK Parliament and those of many other democratically run countries, unless I am mistaken, they do have the means to block or vote on one policy in order to influence another totally unconnected one: Even if they could, I do not recall any party doing so.
Fair enough Was a response to Fonzie. Forgot to press reply. Note the mate.. Not the first thread to go off on a tangent.
OK fair do's did not realise it was a response. Just bored now with all the extreme views and notably name calling on both sides of the political divide on here. It seems no one can manage a debate without it sinking to the level of personal abuse of posters and individual politicians. I mean, I get it that Bojo is not your, or many people's 'flavour of the month' but "the biggest Racist/liar/Adulterer etc in history"? Really? C'mon! Yet in the same thread you moan that people ignore a policies and only look at the politicians and media portrayal. Ironic don't you think?
I edited my response because I read it back to myself to highlight I could see where you were coming from. Re the comment. It was referring to boris and the position of prime minister. I can’t think of one. Maybe there is. But I can’t remember any in my lifetime. Sorry if I took the huff. It’s early.
Apologies in advance if I get huffy this week. Our cat has been having fits and after some expensive visits he looks to have an unusual type of epilepsy which involves cycles of several episodes of drooling and howling for a minute or so every ten minutes which the vet asked us to note down. He is on phenobarbitol now so the gaps are increasing but still occurring during the night. Like having a small baby with all the sleep deprivation that comes with it. On top of that my wife was selected in a random sweep by the Italian tax authorities to make sure our tax returns 2014-2018 were legit. We use an accountant so her income (Teachers pension taxed in UK) and a couple of cashed in matured endowments were all fully declared but, nevertheless they want all sorts of documents dating back to 2014 e.g. the old cashed in endowment policies, UK bank statements online banking and the 'closed' individual accounts are no longer visible to us so have to get them sent from the bank. Laughably after the initial contact (registered letter two weeks ago) they have only told the accountant what documents they want which we found out yesterday as the tax offices are home working and he had trouble getting hold of them. They want them all by Friday this week !! which is impossible given it will take 2-3 weeks for the bank in the UK to get the statements to us. The fine threatened for failure to comply with the deadline is a 4 figure sum. Ludicrous! Our accountant is dealing with it . Ironically we are the least wealthy of all the UK American and Australian expats we know in the area. Several are millionaire status or still have business interests. We, whilst not exactly poor, rely in a couple of small pensions and live in a relatively modest property compared to some of them who have very large properties with lots of land. Such is life.
As far as I remember from college, the founding fathers went to extreme lengths to avoid “government by tyranny “. IE: allowing the president massive powers, and put “checks and balances “ in place to avoid this. I think what you describe is either directly or indirectly a result of this.
Your whole post is absolutely on the money, and a breath of fresh air. The last paragraph in particular, should be noted...
