I agree, before Struber we played fast football counter attacking, that has felt our dna for a while.
I'm not entirely sure what about Struber ball the owners wanted, formation isn't suited to English football at all, wasted our wing talent and forced them to play in RCM or Striker. Boring football even in games we won it was fairly dull bar the odd good passing play.
I much preferred football under Stendel personally and even under PH and the midget.

This is one of those sliding doors moments for me.

Stendel was asked to put a team together that lost its captain, it's 2 centre halves who forged the best defence in the league below and the figurehead striker in Moore, all while taking a step up in leagues.

To replace, we signed a mishmash of very young players, some with no first team experience at all and asked him to mould a championship team from them. It's little wonder he struggled.

If Stendel had been allowed more free reign as afforded to Struber... would we have done better? if he'd been allowed a Sollbauer, would that have assisted to prevent the backline making so many individual mistakes? And cast your mind back... there were so many individual mistakes, players not doing their jobs, that caused the issues.

Yes, at times, we were too gung ho and over extended, but Stendel wasn't necessarily happy about that, just young players with hardly any experience not doing what he was asking and misreading the system he wanted, and the fickle maverick nature of Cavare leaving gaping holes down one flank.

And as this season begins without the requisite quality, Stendel too was having to do the same as Struber, but with minimal experience and with much more raw potential to teach over time.

Struber got the benefit from players who had started to learn and gain experience the hard way. he also benefitted from being allowed to bring in his old former players bringing much experience. I'd hope most managers if allowed that courtesy would do significantly better than being completely thrown to the wolves.

I don't think Struber actually is gengen press in the conventional way, he got the ball via pressure, sure. But then insisted on passing around and backwards instead of fast counter whilst the opposition team is over extended. We scored so many goals with Stendel due to gaining ball in final third and pressing with man advantage, whilst under Struber we get the ball and wait until theyve got every man back to try a shot.

Yep agreed. Stendel is given far too much stick, is he was allowed signings over 25 like he begged for and Struber got, he would have been fine. A good CDM, a older CB and that team would have performed I'm sure of it. I think this current team would have been better under Stendel then it was with Struber

So it's agreed then that we should invite Stendel back and try to give him what he wants to make progress.

I wouldn’t be unhappy with that appointment tbh .
    But I can’t see it as he’s a manager rather than a coach I think .

He gets a nose bleed every time he goes north of Southampton though. :) Plus he's not short of cash

Someone's had a fiver on him then.

If I was choosing from a realistic open field, he'd likely be my first choice, although I don't see what would appeal we would offer for him to move, other than an immediate chance to coach in a higher division.

He's an ex-Red, did a great job at West Brom, done well at Donny and I can imagine he's one of those dressing room influencers who just commands respect, whether as a player or a coach.

100% won't happen though, and whenever we appoint someone I really want, it never works out (hello Nigel Spackman).

He won't come manage us because as people say you shouldn't go back a second time to where you've managed before :D

Depends how ambitious he is imo Donnys natural position is league one whereas ours is Championship with the occasional dip into league one .
At least he’ll get a few seasons in Championship fighting relegation battles :)

I'd take Moore, I was shocked when he dropped down to Donny tbh, I thought he was dead cert for a championship job. Would be a good appointment for us.
