I reach a point of total blankness once the scientists start to explain a black hole to me.
They tell me that a star collapses in on itself to such a degree that it becomes so infinitesimally small yet keeps its gravity.
    Or something akin to that.
    WHAT ?!?!?
How is this knowable by human beings? Sometimes I think that they perpetuate these theories to confuse us into believing them. We can't argue with them, I can't, but it almost becomes the new religion.

I think we're miniature and all the universes were created in petri dishes. Who created science and numbers? How do we know our numbers are correct?

The way I look at it is just as my dog hasn't a clue about great literature, us humans brains can't cope with how the universe came into being, we don't have that ability in us because we all get stuck on how is it possible to get something out of literally nothing.

One theory is that immediately before the "Big Bang" was a "Big Crunch" when the universe contracted into an infinity small "globule" of matter which then exploded outwards. If you follow that, then a combination of attractive forces (gravity) pulled the Universe into itself until the combination of repulsive forces was sufficient to cause the explosive expansion. This would imply that it perhaps wasn't *the* "Big Bang", but *a* "Big Bang" and could be repeating on an almost infinite timescale.

Not sure how this fits in with the multiverse theory, or multi-dimensional quantum string theories, but those are the points where I glaze over when I see the equations.

Isn't this the point of our owners' strategy?

This is why I can't work out the rush to interact with extra-terrestrials. If they can travel light years they're more advanced than us. If they're more advanced they'll have more powerful weapons etc. They might be tree huggers but you never know.

Actually there are an uncountably infinite number of functions but only a countably infinite number of computable functions.

But don't these scientists also provide evidence to support these ideas? The whole 'God' concept relies entirely on blind faith.

Enjoy the thread, it's likely to be a long un.

Brooklyn 99 is a good one if you're into that sort of TV series.

This quite from HGTTG popped up on my timeline a couple of days ago, and felt like a worthy addition to this thread.

My education and logic tells me that the earth, planets and universes were somehow created. There is no God, as the images of our Earth and planets do not suggest a resting place for them (because there is more than 1 "God" as there is more than 1 religion). As to how the matter was created in the first place, I think the scientists are still working that out and this "Big Bang Theory" is just that - a theory.

When I was studying archaeology at university, there was a student on the course who was a creationist and believed the world was created in 4004 BC. He believed in ages such as the Paleolithic, Mesolithic & Neolithic, just that the dates were wrong and much nearer the present day.
As a side issue, I loved The Big Bang Theory series.:)

Was it something that you needed to grow into, because I watched a couple and didn't find it very funny.

Being a nerd all my life, I identified a great deal with the four lads. Kaley Cuoco was a plus point, too.

I liked the first series but then they all got a bit bitchy.
