The op was political and provocative. Please stop with these, you self satisfied arse. It's one thing to talk about politics, it's another to bait. Which you do every couple of weeks, and when everyone tells you to shut up, you claim they're being moany lefties/politicising a neutral point you've made. Nearly as bad as Nudger, at least he's sometimes on about football and can be amusing.
Absolutely it is. That's why 80% of the threads are started on here lately. But lockdown will do that to be people sadly. There's a whole thread about the leader of the opposition calling for a circuit break. Why couldn't this opinion go in there? It fits perfectly. But then you don't get the bites you're looking for and thus don't get the result you want.
He says living in Italy. (good read btw - which punches a hole in your own blame shifting away from the Tory Govt). Your post runs to the classic, "when all else fails simply say you're at war with an unknown/invisible/unseen enemy and blame the media/leftists." What reductionist nonsense. Just jog on eh?
I think I'd like to do that someday though the Mrs isn't quite so keen. Will have to be after I retire though and I would probably do it in reverse. I'd like the idea of the Lakes to look forwards to
Personally speaking, I believe the BBS is a poorer place when you don't post. To paraphrase John Motson "A quality post, from a quality poster".
He’s actually the opposite of Alanis I’d argue - she was trying to be ironic and wasn’t, he’s not trying to be but definitely is!
My thoughts on that are (as you probably know anyway) that in general people get fitter as they walk, and starting at Robin Hood's Bay is physically a bit easier. By the time you get to the Lakes you're fitter and stronger, so you can enjoy it more. The downside is that the prevailing weather often comes from the west, so you could end up walking into a headwind with driving rain into your face (don't show this bit to your missus). Another issue is that Robin Hood's Bay is a great place to finish, with nice pubs, plaques on the walls, walkers jumping into the sea in celebration, lots of back slapping and celebration on finishing the walk. I've done it 3 times now, once in the East to West direction, and there isn't the same atmosphere in St Bees, many people just jump on a train and head home. Hope you get to do it one-day.
Have you done any of the Peak District walks? Might have missed out for this year but would be keen to do one of them early mid November if the weather was at all bearable. Basically not the driving wind and rain in your face that you just mentioned.
Thanks so do I - good point about the prevailing weather - done plenty of walking in the lakes and pennines to know how that works. Actually just had a week in the Howgills - first time I had been there and there is some great walking there - will definitely go back
I've done loads of day walks and several multi-day walks (camping) in the Peak District. My recommendations would be: - Kinder Scout Edges walk, about 18 miles, so for most people it's a 2 day walk with a camp up on top somewhere. This means it's more suited to summer if camping. Fox House Inn to Strines Inn via Carl Wark, Higger Tor, Stanage Edge, Derwent Edge, Back Tor. Another 2 day walk, but it's possible to split it at the A57 at Moscar. Marsden to Edale via bits of the Pennine Way and Black Hill, but going up Wildboar Clough which is one of the best scrambles in the Peaks. Again, it's best done in the summer as Wildboar Clough is often too wet in the winter. Another hard 2 day walk, can be done using a train to Marsden then a train home from Edale. Can be split at Crowden or at the Snake Pass crossing. The Great Ridge, Hope to Edale via Lose Hill, Hollins Cross, Mam Tor and Rushup Edge. A high level single day walk with train connections at both ends. Maybe as admin you should move all this walking stuff to another thread? I appear to have "polluted" the main topic of the thread
That sounds interesting, did you stay in B&Bs? How far did you walk everyday? I completed the St Cuthbert's Way in the Borders a couple of weeks ago, loved it! Looking for my next walking adventure.
It probably was gallows humour, whatever Johnson said. The thing is, he's said that many inexcusable things that one innocuous thing may have, understandably, been taken the wrong way. He's actually a PR disaster if nobody is there to hold his hand in public.
I went with a friend and her dog, and both of them refuse to camp, as the camping gear and dog biscuits are too heavy. So we stayed in B and Bs each night, which is obviously more expensive, but it is nice to have a clean bed and a shower each night. Some people use a booking and transport company, which do all the planning and booking for you, and transport your baggage each day. This means you only have to carry stuff you need for the day - waterproofs, food, water etc. However, it's expensive, from talking to others they paid about twice as much as we did for the same standard of accommodation. As for distance, we averaged about 12 miles a day, longest was 17, shortest 7. A lot depends on accommodation, sometimes you have to stop early as it's too far to the next available option. When I go on my own, I like to camp but stay in B and Bs if the weather is bad or when I need a shower
It makes a refreshing change for a thread to be hijacked from being negative to positive. I'm all for it! Thanks for those recommendations. Some of the views over Chatsworth/Bakewell are just incredible.
My mate did it in a bonkers 9 days. Was averaging 25 mile a day. I did the last day with him in to Robin Hood's Bay at 24 miles and he was a broken man!
how can you defend a government who have presided over the worst figures for deaths in Europe, and one of the highest rates in the world?????????? add to that the way they has mishandled the economy, spunked 12 BILLION, yes TWELVE BILLION on their friends in the name of 'a world beating' app, besides all the other millions, which will amount to billions they have given again, to their friends in the name of PPE, the track and trace system (another thing that doesnt work!!!), and god knows what else. all in the name of getting brexit done. i suppose you'll be really happy to eat the chlorinated food coming over fro the US when they drop our food standards to the low level of the US as well, wont youi? well, you ought to be made to eat it, and lets see what effects is has on you, besides the chlorination, it will be stuffed full of chemicals, that under EU regs were not allowed to be used. i REALLY hope you suffer. You need to check the real facts, not the BS that this govt puts out as propaganda. Get real..
We met a bloke at St Bees who was planning 7 days, and eventually finished it in 6. He ended up in hospital with shin splints and serious infections in both legs caused by blisters and sores. Last I heard one of his legs was in danger, but we've lost contact now so I don't know how it went. I can't understand the attraction of making it a race, the longer it takes the more enjoyable it is, in my opinion.
