I'm well thank you. Yes I watch Only Connect sometimes as well. I'm not very good either, I think I got a question right in 2014 :D

I'm not too bad at University Challenge, or Mastermind. But Only Connect? I feel a sense of pride and achievement when I get a question correct. Which rarely happens.:D

Mastermind is the easiest of those 3, by a way. The General Knowledge questions on the Celebrity episodes are very easy indeed. UC has some very bright young individuals indeed, it makes you wonder if they just read about everything all the time as well as for the degree they are doing, very impressive. :)

Some interesting names on that link including some ex Reds. Shackell, Butterfield and Ryan Shotton to name but three.

I suppose the questions are (not just the ex Reds) is any of them desperate to play? Are they that financially set they don't have to play? Have they lost the hunger? Are they willing to come to us on lower wages and do a 'Vaz Te' and knuckle down, impress and get a dream move/contract elsewhere and make us some coin?

If it was me I'd play for nowt and try and get a contract. Keep fit, they're earning jack all anyway. If I was a manager and a player wanted to come for nowt, maybe on a pay as you play basis I'd be suitably impressed and be snapping hands off.

But I suppose I live in a fantasy world, unlike footballer's.

You make a lot of sense mate, but at the end of the day, no footballer in this day and age is "going to play for nowt".

BTW - Butterfield has signed recently for Melbourne Victory, in case you didn't know

The game as evolved so much since the likes of Jon Parkin were coming through.

I might be a minority but the the days of the target man centre forward are over. It's more a focal point for the attack that is needed now. You need to be able to score on the deck and bring people into play on the floor. It isn't all height. Shielding the ball is an asset. I think Schmidt and Woodrow are both more than capable if the ball is into feet. Woodrow is decent in the air if the ball is played into the box.

The OP (and others including me) will be encouraged - Adam Murray would like to have the option of something 'different'.......

It's all pointing towards Murray for me. Bahre training with the under 23's Ritzmaire and Ludewig depart with Struber. Kane, James come in and Woodrow signs a new deal. Oduor back in the team Frieser on the bench. I wouldn't be surprised if the target man Murray wants get brought in too.

But nobody else is doing the business so what have we to lose. He might just surprise us all

Which is why sticking a big centre half up top from kick off just wouldn't work. As a 10 minute cameo at the end, why not, but that's it

Not necessarily SD. If they were going to give it to Murray, they would have done it by now. I think they're still interviewing/deciding who to appoint

Cannot see the harm in trying we keep playing centre forwards on wing and right backs at left back and left backs at right back. Anything is worth a try if you have a board that can't see further than the end of their nose, what is needed

Makes me laugh a caretaker gets the job based on results after a probation period of x number of games whereas a random European coach that could be utter gash gets a contract straight after interview.

Same in every walk of life though isn't it. I didn't get a promotion at work one time after actually doing the job for 6 months, it went to someone else with no experience in our sector at all, he was a total outsider.

They put my ex manager on one of the reception desks with me to learn the job when he graduated from University. He then set about changing the department for "the better". He didn't last long.

Nice one. This outsider of mine didn't last long either, after getting bombarded by me and the others that had done the job for years. I moved sideways and got the job on shift, just before he "left" and my colleague got the promotion - which was OK because she'd done the job longer than I had.

I agree with you entirely. The style we play doesn't accommodate a target man as such. We do need someone who can hold the ball up though and help get others into play.
