I guess it depends on the age of the house really. I wouldn't want to do it to a 150+ year old house for that reason. A 60s house on the other hand wouldn't look any worse.
Yeah considered all those factors. But it was a really oversized unattractive one and made the room really difficult. Plus it was boarded up and we didn't want a log burner as it's a really warm room. The one in our bedroom was even worse because it wasn't centred. Definitely a messy job and we were nervous but it's turned out well.
Decades ago we had a chimney breast removed. Never, ever again. We had terrible problems with smoke in our living room every winter afterwards.
They quoted us £3,500 plus VAT for the full removal and making good. It was almost as much just to have the ground floor only out because of the steel to support the weight above. We again got lucky though because they were already working on next doors house so they added the work on to that job and charged us a day rate and for materials and it came in cheaper. But I'd work to the quote above. Obviously on top of that you need a new carpet and to redecorate. As messy as the job was they managed to contain it to the two affected rooms. They sealed them off with plastic and just dropped it section by section down the hole in to the living room. From there they took out the front window and went straight up a ramp in to a skip on the front lawn.
I've got no intention of having a chimney removed, I'm just a nosey bugger. How long does it take to get rid of a chimney?
My grandson who is 3 was only telling me yesterday that because they have no chimney Father Christmas Can’t deliver his presents,so if you get rid of it I’ll have it and I’ll tell him we have got one for him. Kids
Took a full week. All the rubble was gone in a couple of days. Then the joiner had to put in the joists and skirting, followed by the plasterer to dry line and then skim. We added in loads of other jobs which meant it took longer.

Different but related topic our chimney runs up the party wall a couple of years ago our next door neighbour mentioned they got a slight smell of smoke when we had a fire. Got someone to put a camera down and they reckoned the rendering was going. Gave me 2 options convert to small log burner which we didn’t want to do as we like the open fire. Or he could coat the inside with some sealant for the meagre sum of £3500 and he would have to fit an air brick in the lounge. Had planned to try and get other quotes this summer but .... That just seems a lot to basically paint the inside of a chimney
Yea, but you can't shove children down chimneys to paint em in England anymore, but you might get away with using Jimmy Cranky or our Nicola in Scotland.
That's not fair mate. He's obviously very proud of them. In fact so proud he doesn't bother with curtains so the neighbours can enjoy them as well.
There's a house full of student girls across the road Which is why Mrs ARK is out shopping for them...
Fair does mate. Do they not bother with curtains either? If they don't I'm surprised you even bother to find the time and motivation to post on here. I'm gonna stop now cos its starting to sound like a 1974 Carry on film plot
