Wow! It just goes to show the real dangers to your looks what supporting Barnsley does.

He barely ever attended Barnsley games. The fact that he talks about Skinner Normanton from the 50’s rather than Johnny Kelly, Danny Blanchflower or Tommy Taylor shows he was more interested in telling a tale about a grim hard team than the truth. It would be like talking about the 70’s/80’s in terms of Graham Pugh, Alan Little and Billy Ronson and not mentioning Millar, Glavin or Banks.

    I hope I look that well when I'm 85. In fact I hope I'm alive when I'm 85 :)

You say that but we 'time travel' so to speak these days. A clip on YouTube reminds us of what people used to be and how we remember them. So them aging isn't just the five or so years they've been out of the public eye.

Whether he attended week in week out isn't really important is it? His memories of players such as Skinner Normanton is surely just a preference of who he enjoyed watching most?

He gets some bad press in Barnsley does Parky but I've never heard him talk of the place in a derogatory way in fact he speaks of a hard place to grow up and live as a younger man but I enjoy his stories and the wry smile that comes across his face when he recalls Barnsley and the people.

My dad dislikes him because he says he once slagged off Holgate so I'm not so sure about him not making any derogatory remarks. I get the impression my dad thinks he was too good for the area etc.

I don't get that impression form haven't seen anything to make me feel he thought he was to good for the area. I've always thought he seemed genuinely proud to come from Barnsley.

To be fair to my dad it was whatever he said about Holgate that annoyed him so maybe not Barnsley as a whole as I've interpreted...

You’re right and that’s a fair point. Maybe I’m being harsh but he has never struck me as being a particular fan of football.

He was asked by the Old Boys association for a contribution to Holgate's centenary programme and he replied saying that he hated Holgate and its teachers and couldn't wait to get away from the school. Didn't go down too well since Martin Moxon, Brian Glover and Stan Richards had already contributed.

Ah thanks for this! I think he's spoken negatively about Holgate in public too from what I recall but it may be the above. Whatever he did say my dad felt it was grossly unfair and saw it as him turning his back on who had helped educate him.

It’s a Yorkshire Trait in some people where they like to impress they know all about the person and their family and know some unknown secrets but in fact never really knew them at all .
Heard derogatory stories darn pit of Dickie Bird, Brian Glover, Barry Hines , Harry Worth and one or two more .

My information came from more than one of his class mates at Holgate.

Wasn’t trying to undermine you’re particularly story tbh . It may well be true I was just emphasising the general attitudes .
Some of the old miners who were pulling these celebrities down never knew them , some knew of them in their villages etc , a lot of the talk was village gossip and jealousy , it seemed at the time that everyone who had made a name for themselves in Barnsley were all ******** .
No doubt some of the stories will be true I expect but no more than the average joe has done imo .
By the way i know ex Broadway pupils who hated the School as much if not more than some of the celebrities along with pupils who hates other schools in the area .
