Cohort and Segue are ****ing annoying words that I now hear and read on a daily basis and hadn't even heard off until about 3 years ago.
I first met cohort when I was at school doing Latin. A cohort was a division of a Roman legion; a 5000 man legion divided up into ten cohorts until the 1st century AD and then nine cohorts after that. The first cohort was double strength. When I started teaching I was surprised to meet it again, meaning a group of pupils of the same age moving forward through the system. I suppose Year Group is as good, but they always like to dress things up. Segue is a relatively new one on me. I first met it in correspondence with an American friend about 15 years ago and I was stumped. I know what it means now, but it still seems alien. I've never used it.
Reach out - ok a bit longer than just this year but I've heard it more and more this year, can't help thinking of the Four Tops
"World beating / leading" particularly when referring to something that is far from what that phrase actually means.
