Yeah, I’d go along with that. It’s almost as if people mature with age or something huh?

Agree with the success, he deserves all the recognition he’s going to get.

I'd have thought most top sports men and women would need a high level of self confidence , and it is easy for that to be played out as arrogance, particularly when you're younger.

Oh definitely! And yeah, there is certainly a fine line between self confidence and arrogance.

People in F1 seem to consistently say that he is the best driver there has ever been in the sport. He might have the best car but they wouldn’t pick him to drive it if he wasn’t special and he is streets ahead of Bottas in the same car. There’s a good article on the BBC website about him.
I agree with Helen though; this year, for a Sports Personality, it should be Rashford. What he has done transcends his sport.

Hamilton is an all time sporting great.

I’m so proud that he is British and I’m proud that he’s found his voice off the track too.

Any English person that still disrepects him should hang their heads in shame.

We have the greatest in our midst and we should celebrate him.

Verstappen is super quick but is still miles behind Hamilton in terms of ability.

A great racing driving driver but I can't take to him personality wise.

Been spoilt and privileged from a very early age.

Fantastic achievement from Hamilton. Not his biggest fan but you can't argue with his stats!
My main concern is with F1 as a whole, some of the races are just so bloody boring and it's such a shame the new regulations aren't now coming in until 2022. We will have to put up with another season of Mercedes domination when they will once again (8th year running) have by far and away the quickest car on the grid. I can see him Hamilton retiring in 12 months time when he wins his 8th world championship as he will have nothing left to achieve. I just wish Toto Wolff would bin off the useless Bottas and put someone in the other Mercedes who would take more of a fight to Hamilton but they won't allow that.

Amazing achievement by Lewis. You've got to be good to win a World Championship, but he's now won 7! He's equalled Schumacher for World Championship's but surely he's got to be the best ever now. He's also got every other record going: most wins, most poles, most points, most points in consecutive races, most GPs led, most laps led etc. etc.

SPOTY of the year 2020 for sure

there’s no point asking why. there’s been plenty of racing drivers come from the council estates though yea? Those ones who aren’t privileged...

They had a friend of his on breakfast news who basically said when he moved to F1 he basically outdrove whoever was no.1 for his team at the time. Sounds like he made an immediate impact, probably due to his natural talent.

The fact we are having to debate his quality suggests there’s a deeper issue here.
