Some people have made a career out of being offended and have those in authority in organisations like the BBC frightened of their own shadows. It's a song about two old drunks insulting one another that's all no hidden messaging no homophobia just two piss heads having a domestic. People need to see things for what they are not be offended by anything and everything.
I generally agree however the nuance means Its not that simple. I don’t think the bbc have necessarily done anything different to what they do every day. The vast majority of people I’ve seen being “offended” are offended because they think someone is being PC or something similar. They couldn’t give a rats arse about the other 3000 songs the bbc censor every year but because they like this one it’s become “a thing” Truth be told they couldn’t even give a rats arse about this one.
Why don’t they just changed the word from ****** to Tagget then all we’re insulting are the Scots.....Soz Ian
Doesn't particularly bother me. If a word is inappropriate then you just bleep it don't you, it happens every day. However I've read a lot of people say that when the song was written, and thus in the song as we hear it, ****** didn't mean the homophobic slur that we think it does and meant something else. Is that true? And if it is true does that make any difference?
Hang on a minute, I’m not moaning about owt, and yeah as others said there are worse things happening in the world! BUT I didn’t start this thread, and it was about opinions on a specific fking song! And silly me I offered an opinion. Just to be clear I haven’t listened to radio 1 for years so really wouldn’t have been arsed to get offended but hey somebody posted a thread about opinions so I and others actually gave one. Then some other folk took it on themselves to blow said opinions out of all proportion, go figure...
I think the best example of OTT censorship has to be the banning in USA of Link Wrays “Rumble “, ,,,,,,,, it’s an instrumental!
And I gave my opinion - I just quoted your post because I disagreed with it. What's your point? People of course have a right to an opinion, but they also have to live with it being questioned.
To the best of my recollection, the BBC didn’t ban Lou Reed’s Walk on the Wild Side with all its content. Probably because the stuffed shirts at the Beeb didn’t understand its meaning. So it beggars the question, if you don’t understand something’s meaning, can it be offensive? They were happy later to allow Dave Lee Travis to call people a ‘Berk’ on live phone ins on national radio. Probably another they didn’t understand.
It's probably the best festive song IMO, but being a DJ I'm fairly sick to the back teeth of it now. To be fair to the BBC they've left it open to the different stations which they play & some channels like 6 music have left it to the DJs, which is about as fair as it gets. I think like Shakespeare or any content that is character based it is not offensive in itself, it is the voice of two roguish characters, as McGowan explained himself. That said radio stations & DJs are there to broadcast to an audience. I can't really see where it fits into the Radio 1 playlist these days, which is all R&B, grime & dance pretty much.
I think there’s some decent Christmas songs out there it’s just they roll out the same ones year after year,
No you didn’t, everyone else gave an opinion, just that, no outrage just an opinion. You then took in upon yourself to blow those opinions out of all proportion for some reason and try to create something that wasn’t intended. That’s my point
Maybe. I think for me it is the repetitive nature of hearing the same songs for a month each year that makes me hate them. I dont listen to any music like that as id end up sick of it very quickly.
