Can you remember on that 'muck stack' corner looking over fence pre match and half time watching cricket on the coop sports ground ?

Looking at the team photos in The Official History 1887-1998 ---

The player sitting in front of Rimmo is almost certainly Walter Bennett who was at the club 1946-7 and 1947-8.
At this period Johnny Kelly was at BFC - easily recognisable from photos of that period as he's almost bald but he doesn't feature in the photo posted on this thread.
Been unable to match any other players from the team photo in the book with the photograph on this thread.

Could the team photo in the OP have been a team of reserves?

This is a photo of the 1949/50 team. I don't think any player is on both pictures which would be unusual for that pre-Bosman period.

Griffiths - second left front row, is he in the same position in the first photo?

yes, almost certainly Griffiths in the same position on both photos - but where is the easily identifiable Johnny Kelly on the first photo. Could these players in the top picture have been attached to the club but not first team players.

You could be right RT, it may be a picture of Barnsley Reserves. The very sparse crowd in the background supports your theory at a time when we were averaging around 17,000 for home games

I heard that the pyramids were modelled on our muck stacks. They sent a team over to do some surveys.

The players are before my time, but the pyramids at the back are the muckstacks at Barnsley Main colliery. I went to school on Kendray Hill, St. Joseph's, just opposite. We used to call them the Barnsley Alps. One of my grandad's stories was that he'd helped lay the foundations of them when he worked at the pit in the 1900s.

I think it was called the Monny after the monument that's still there (is it? I hope so) at the summit of Kendray hill, opposite what was Kendray hospital. It is a memorial to the men who died in the Oaks Colliery disaster of 1866. We used to call them the Monny fields.

According to The Official History Book of Barnsley Fc Ted Robledo only played 5 times altogether for the Reds first team and that was in 47/48 so that narrows in down a bit if its the first team.

On the front row, I've got Shotton second from left; Bennett in centre. On the back row: Mansley ??? on the left; then Robledo; Cunningham ??; Rimmington the goalie. I think the photo must date from the war years when I guess that some players were conscripted and the team was made up largely of miners in a reserved occupation. I can't find a similar photo with the names and the rest don't tally with the photos I do have, Interesting feature, though. Thanks for posting it.

I think that you are right and that it is Griffiths and not Shotton second from left.

Think you're right with Robledo Bennett and Griffiths - not sure about Mansley and Cunningham. The most identifiable player of that period was Johnny Kelly yet he doesn't appear in the original picture on this thread.
Looking at a team photo of 1939/40 there were about 40 players in it - if there were that number of players at the club in 1946/7 then the photo we're studying could be any 11 of them ??

Slightly unrelated, but my grandad took this at the top of Wombwell Main muck stack. Amazing how times change
