Reports in Germany that Nissan is about to announce closure of its Sunderland plant. Just the 7000 jobs lost.

Worry not though; this is massively offset by us getting our country back, keeping that sovereignty thing and best of all, blue passports.

Only one winner here, EU losers....

I’m yet to hear a single convincing argument for progressing with this shambles. You know, now we know what’s coming it kinda stinks.

We’re taking back control of virtually nowt

No, you know full well that leave voters definitely knew what they were voting for, as they keep telling us.

That is exactly our plan in the next 3 years. Hopefully some sort of semblance of normality will have taken place by then: I can live in hope. What really gets me is that loads of ex pats in Spain voted for Brexit: just how stupid are they

It is the Sunderland Echo though - they would have a vested interest in the factory not closing and would be very keen to report Nissan's denial.

It really is demoralising. Obviously we knew about Brexit but there was no way to bring our plans forward due to kids leaving school.

I'm part time UK, part time Spain and the hoops that you have to jump through at the moment to make a permanent move are ridiculous. Programmes like a Place in the Sun make it look so simple. It's a long way from that.

    Damn.

I am in the motor manufacturing industry and whilst not directly involved with Nissan it does give me cause for concern for my place of work if true.

Have things changed a lot or has it always been difficult to get residency?
We've been planning and looking for years as it was always our plan to leave again (we spent 12 years in Hong Kong).

I can’t answer that as I have only had a house there for just under two years and we have not seriously considered going for Residencia. If is bound to be harder now though with the Brexit factor making so many take the plunge and the system is getting pretty congested. There is so much “good advice” sloshing around the expat forums, much if it contradicting itself. It looks very complicated, time consuming and can be very expensive. To be honest I’m happy with the 90 days in 180 arrangement at the moment as I’m not too keen on the blistering heat in High summer so, at least for now, will not be applying for it.

You are missing a 0 out. For each job lost in a large scale redundancy like this, another 9 indirect jobs are lost or affected in the supply chain or service industries that are used by those made redundant. I've seen around 27,000 quoted in the supply chain, plus also the pubs, restaurants, take-aways, taxis, hotels, shops, hairdressers and others around Sunderland and the wider area.
