    Yes.

But that's nowhere near as bad as abusing someone for something that's beyond their control, such as their sexual orientation or colour of their skin.

Agreed Helen, but it's just rainbow flags, armbands and shoelaces for one game against Wycombe. What a thing to get upset about

    I still maintain, it's a great idea.

Who are the snowflakes again? Is it those who stand up for social justice (insert another derogatory term) or the right wing Patriots?

What are you on about? In what way is showing support for the gay and trans community political? Calling the referee/linesman a **** for making a bad decision might hurt their feelings, but its because of something they've chosen to do, and can rectify the next game or whenever - hurling abuse at someone because they're gay or black i.e. not their choice is completely different. Please, for the love of God, tell me you understand that.

At some point you just have to say that people are bigots and stop giving them the benefit of the doubt, unfortunately.

I've got no issue with any of these symbolic gestures but the problem is they're just token gestures. The intention is good but honestly I don't think there's a single homophobe who will change their mind because of the colour of laces on football boots or a single racist who will suddenly stop being racist because of someone kneeling down.

They're great and they show solidarity and that can only be a good thing. Letting a gay or bisexual player know you support them is brilliant but on its own it's not enough. There needs to be much more work done normalising inclusivity because as nice as a pair of shoelaces are the only way you're going to change an homophobes mind is by showing them that some of their heroes are gay, that their cousin is gay, that the man down the street is gay etc and that it doesn't make any difference as to who they are.

How you do that I have absolutely no idea but it's definitely needed. Perhaps TV shows and adverts should be showing more gay couples but not even mentioning their sexuality, just a family with two mum's or two dad's etc. It always seems to be that if they're shown then it's focused on instead of being seen as normal.
