As much as one can impute some logic in Boris, I think what he meant was a Canada style deal which in the immediate aftermath of the Brexit vote was touted by the EU. However, I think two things have happened since then. The first is that the EU has woken up to the possibility that their near neighbour can start out-competing them in a way that Iceland, Norway and Canada aren't really in a position to do. The second thing is a politically unpopular at home Macron has started throwing his weight around and fishing has become a much bigger issue than it otherwise might have been as he can't be seen to be losing face. Boris hasn't got the same pressures as he has a large majority and four more years to leave behind what he thinks will be a bump in the road. Being objective I think we have gone from one extreme of negotiating on our part under a supine May to a bellicose Boris

 

The thing that baffles me is that Macron doesn't get so much as a sprat under 'no deal'?

 

Just quoting the following example, under WTO rules, all cars exported from the UK to the EU will suffer a 10% import duty. All cars exported from the EU to the UK will suffer a corresponding 10% import duty. There are no British Car manufacturers any longer. They are all multi-nationals. How do you think they are going to take it when they find that they are suddenly less competitive. Are they going to sit there whilst their market disappears, or are they going to begin manufacturing that car in a different country. Sadly, that means exporting far more jobs than we import.

I just can't see any benefit to Brexit at the moment. Usually you can weigh up one set of arguments/benefits against another.
Brexit seems thin gruel at the moment, I hope the Tories have lots of Aces up their sleeve that we don't know about so we can see the sunlit uplands that racist,cheating,lying, lazy, f*cking useless worst PM ever clown BoJo spaffs on about.

That was always going to happen though wasn't it? He's responding to pressure from in France from the farmers and fishermen - and we all know what they can do. Very convenient for Mr Johnson though, "Oh **** Brexit is a disaster, I know, we'll blame the French!"

 

Do we produce/grow/manufacture anything to the scale where we could dump a load of exports in the EU and corner the market? Not that I disagree with your point, I think it's very salient, I'm just sceptical we have that capacity.

I don’t think it was a con on the public. Most leave voters will have voted that way knowing full well they were likely to be financially worse off out of the EU. You’d have be be naive or dumb to think otherwise.
But that’s not why most people voted leave - as has been well rehearsed on other posts.
There really is no point saying to people “that’s what you get for voting leave.” It doesn’t carry any weight.

Having a pop at Johnson et al for lying is pretty pointless as well. Again, most folk knew what they were getting with his outrageous about face on the EU as they did when they voted him in as PM a year ago.
