Interesting article about Lewis Hamilton...

It costs an arm and a leg. So much that his dad had to get a second job to pay for it. My dad wouldn't do that. He is privileged to have been allowed that opportunity.


Edit: that isn't Lewis's fault at all or his dads. It's great that his dad worked so hard and made so many sacrifices for his son and good on Lewis for enjoying it too. I just find it a little hypocritical of him to then talk about privilege giving people better chances in life.

 

Folk say darts isn't a sport. Well I'm **** hot with a nail gun but I couldn't get a 9 dart finish. Although I can drive and if it wasn't for the 70mph limit I could definitely drive faster (in my 1.3 Kia Rio). Formula 1 is boring.

 

It isn't that expensive though. My neighbour went Karting with his son and I reckoned I spent more watching Barnsley home and away over a season than he did with his lad. I'm talking hobbyist here and the bloke did all the mechanics himself because that is what he was interested in - and spending time with his son.

 

He lives on another planet. Worst part about it is that he has gone so completely bonkers, he can't see how ridiculous he looks. Like back in the summer when he was posting videos on Twitter, on board his yacht, about the the state of the world's climate and oceans. And how he had "time to reflect, with no phone, no cameras...". Yet he's there posing in a video, on his boat, in some oasis on the other side of the planet, wearing his 10 grand sunglasses.

It's all about attention. He tries to speak and act so prophetically but most people see through it, thankfully.

He came out a couple of weeks ago stating he wants to be part of the Mercedes family forever (which he is the poster boy of... who are also sponsored by a huge oil and gas company). A company with a very chequered history (affiliation with the Nazis etc). Not to mention a company that lied about its emissions, like VW. And what about his 15 supercars? Oh but, Lewis says we must all become vegans.

It's nothing to do with his colour for me. But naturally, any time anyone critisises Lewis, it's because of his skin colour. I'm happy to call out a hypocrite whatever their colour, background etc.

Fernando Alonso said it best when he said F1 drivers take around 200 flights a year, you can't then say "don't eat meat". Unfortunately, meat is cheap for struggling families and is a way of adding protein and nutrition into diets on low budgets.

How do people feel on here about him holding Mercedes to ransom over a new contract? I'm pretty sure Toto Wolf said if Mercedes were to pay Hamilton what he was asking, they'd have to sell infrastructure which would mean a loss of jobs. It just stinks! And in the next breath Lewis is preaching about the inequalities of capitalism... happy to put plenty of commoners out of work though.

 

It is a bit weird that you feel he is privileged and dislike him for that, whilst accepting there's nothing wrong with what he or his father has done.

If he and his father have had to work extremely hard to get where he is, what is wrong with using that experience to try and make it more accessible for others?

Whereas I know someone who did it for one year then had to stop because it is too expensive.

A lot of kids aren't lucky enough for their parent to pay for them going up and down the country watching football home and away either to be honest.

 

You misunderstand again. I don't dislike him for being privileged. Literally every formula one driver is. I find him an hypocrite for saying that other people are privileged when he himself is. Do you not see the difference?

 

Has he been saying that about people outside F1? If so I haven't seen it. He has however highlighted the vast amounts of money it cost his family and he would like to try and address that so less privileged children can be involved- I don't see anything wrong with that. He is accepting that it cost a fortune and he doesn't want others to have to do the same- doesn't make him a hypocrite at all if thats what you're referring to.

I had 3 jobs at one point whilst bringing my kids up. I also remember my mum having 3 part time jobs when we were kids so she could save up for a family holiday.

parents make sacrifices for their kids all the time, it’s not even close to being unusual, it’s nearer to the norm. Thousands of parents give up their time not just for their own kids, but to help other people’s kids too, local football teams, theatre groups, scouts etc etc.

Sometimes you make sense, but sometimes your entrenched opinions come from such a place of complete ignorance it’s breathtaking.

 

You misunderstand Donny. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with it. I am saying that he was privileged to be allowed to do what is famously one of the most expensive hobbies. Privileged to continue as it got more expensive and privileged to have his education provided by McLaren. Nothing wrong with that at all? Fair play to him. It happens, his dad is a good parent.

My only issue comes when the person who was privileged and lucky then preaches about privilege without a hint of irony.

 

A parent from a regular family without brass works their ******** off for their kid so that they can do their hobby and that suddenly makes them privileged.... ok I'd say it is the exact opposite.

Guys if you have kids, don't bend over backwards for them, it will make you privileged!!!!

And whatever you do, don't try and make it easier for kids without money because that will make you a hypocrite and a bit of a ****!!! Just don't say anything at all, ok?

 

every kid that runs out for the reds this afternoon will have benefitted from their parents getting up at daft o clock every weekend and standing in the freezing rain supporting them.

being born into a world where you don’t need to work because your parents are millionaires is privilege, being sent to private schools where you walk straight into a job in the city is privilege.

Having supportive parents is not privilege, it’s simply ‘normal’.

Sadly not " normal" for a lot of kids, but I take your point that its not privilege in a being born with a silver spoon in your mouth sort of a way

 

Having a parent who risks remortgaging their house, works multiple jobs etc should never be classed as privileged in my opinion.

 

Just makes me laugh when he says stuff like ,”I hope I can inspire more grass roots interest” or ordinary people to have a go. Like that’s an affordable thing
