Ugbo, Toney, Armstrong, Wood etc. All dismissed by many on here as “never a footballer”, “won a competition” etc. Maybe those in the game might know a bit more than you. By all means say they’re not playing well, but these players are where they are for a reason, to suggest they’re conmen is a bit silly.
Way too young to lead the line in the Championship when we had him. His next two loan spells were in the league below. Poor recruitment on our part. Not if we were buying him as one for the future, but as loan player we expected to perform it was daft.
Vic was getting similar stick at the beginning of the season. Thomas, Miller and Schmidt getting it now.
Kind of agree with this - i liked Toney and Armstrong when they were with us. (Armstrong’s goal at Preston was genius). Ugbo’s best game was at Wembley when we played Spurs in the cup. Didn’t do much else though. However, the talent ID system isn’t without its faults - Chelsea in particular have a track record if signing the fastest and strongest young athletes and then try to mould them into footballers - Alex Kiwomya being an example - not that gifted as a footballer, and initially picked up via a Gifted and Talented Athletics assessment - basically he was lightening quick. Dropped through the leagues.
wonder if no one takes into account young lads playing and living away from their homes,as they get older stronger settle down in life, all may play apart in how they progress?
I agree with you to a degree , as Victor , Miller & Schmidt have had limited opportunities & I think it is harsh judging a player on so little evidence , however with Thomas I can understand fans reaching their conclusions on the lad, as he has had more than a fair crack of the whip with over 50 appearances & seems to have stagnated whist other players with similar opportunities have progressed .
Really? Armstrong? Wow. I thought for his age he was a brilliant striker. Had pace, flair and could finish from all sorts of angles. Never saw/heard him get any stick but those that did, it's best just to ignore them as they've probably never played the game or at least not to a standard where they can offer a valued opinion. I remember Kent getting some stick a few seasons ago and I just had to laugh.
When Ugbo first started with us he looked good, fast feet. Lot of pressure heeped on young shoulders to be leading the line in the championship. I liked Armstrong and watched that class goal at Preston surrounded by shocked North Enders.
I thought his best game was the 3-0 win over Sunderland. In fact I was impressed with our full squad until match 17 then I don't know what Hecky said to em'.
Was that the game when he scored? Even my Sunderland mate, who came down for the game was impressed lol
Ugbo joined us the season after Tammy Abraham had scored about 400 in a season at Bristol City. He was billed as 'the next Abraham' or 'he is more highly regarded than Abraham by Chelsea' and it was always going to be a burden to live up to that at a young age. He was pants though, and as said was not what we needed at the time. Re Kiwomya, Fired spot on. Someone had told him he had talent, fair enough, but people also told him he had already made it. Sadly he believed it.
With little else to do in the current lockdown, I had a trawl through the European leagues for strikers who were doing the business and Ike's name came up. I was just looking at leagues which would represent an equivalent, or slightly lower than our Championship. Some pretty impressive scorers around like Astrit Seljmani in Sweden; Lukas Julic at Sparta Prague; Alba Ademi in Finland; Ramos Mieroz in Croatia; there are three good 'uns at RB Saltzburg, but I think that would be out of our range. I have no idea what any of these players are like, but they are knocking in the goals and are of an age which would interest us.
