Electrical regs basically state any connection or termination of a cable should be accessible so sticking a JB on and plastering it in is not a good idea, plus any moisture from the new plaster may get into the JB causing a short and making the exact issue your trying to avoid. If you are going to plaster, remove the wires completely and put in a junction box under the floor/in the loft (depending on location of socket) Please do not just terminate and plaster in, this is potentially dangerous!.
I know that it's not good to do it and would t suggest it but in theory what should happen if I accidentally drilled through a cable in a wall? Should it trip before I get a shock or would it be after?
Leaning towards just putting a blanking plate up and putting a canvas picture over it. Easy option. It's in the kitchen and the previous owner obviously had a tv up on the wall and it looks very unsightly. Thanks all for the advice, appreciated as ever.
Hiya Mate Technically it should trip.. (within 0.4 seconds) but that doesnt mean it will and relies upon the consumer unit actually having some form of RCD protection.. many current households still have the old rewireable fuses. Id also say that the drill will probably be double insulated so should offer protection for you. However the drill might not be so lucky. Also the cable will then be damaged and will more than likely require repairing anyway before the RCD will allow it to be switched back on. If the old socket space is to be plastered anyway, for the extra few feet of damage id suggest taking it out completely.
I don't know what I'm doing and I'd say take it out too. If it's not there it can't be a problem. I just wondered if the design was to trip before you die or just before the house burnt down
Personally redstone. Buy a blank plate. Less than a quid. (Screw fix or any trade counter). Use connectors ( 30+ amp if on a ring) for wires. 2 minute job no plastering . It’s allus there if you want to replace it later then. Or is it imperative it’s plastered over. ?.
As I say it's just high up (previous owner tv)and is unsightly. Think I'll go with this option and put a picture of some sort over it. Low cost easy option.
