He can still go school as the TAs will still be in school. I understand she is working on the advice of her union but its still hard to get my head round when I have to continue to go to work and mix with dozens if not more to make food for her to sit at home and eat while his education suffers. If it's not safe for teachers why is it safe for the TAs? Why is it safe for me and thousands of others in jobs that are for my money not as essential as teaching?
Wouldnt be suprised if football gets suspended again all professional boxing has been suspended for the month of January and they get tested and all spend weeks in a bubble before a fight.
Seems mad doesn't it? Regardless of if schools should be open or not this mess is just plain ridiculous. If the schools are open and the teacher isn't going in they aren't working from home for my money. They are, rightly or wrongly on strike. This is where some of my anger comes from, yes I'm against lockdown. But if we are going to have one then everything none essential should stop. We are shutting schools but still having football taking place, what kind of madness is this?
It's not safe for the TA either, perhaps they are not in a union or do not have a pre-existing health condition or someone at home with one and feels safer than the teacher does. Unless you have the teacher's medical records (plus those that they live with) then you have no idea what you are asking of them. As for you making food 'for her to sit at home and eat' that is just ridiculous, are you not making food for every single person in the country to eat whether they are working, furloughed or not employed at all, do you begrudge them eating the food you make too and judge their life choices before they are allowed to take a bite? I see further down you compare it to striking, not once when striking have I delivered 5 one hour lessons back to back online to 30 people that have already had to be replanned (as you can't deliver the same thing as you would in class as you won't have the resources or the same back and forth flow of questioning and conversations that would take up lesson time) and then marked them ready to do the same the next day and the next.
Would like to presume either way, she worked throughout the last lockdown however. Sounds like a number of the teachers at the school have the made decision based on the union position.
Don't actually begrudge them because I'm happy that I get to keep going to work otherwise I could end up with bo job. But it's none essential food, so should we not be stopping all production of none essential food to keep as many workers as possible safe and allowing them to be furloughed? Should we not be doing the same for online shopping of other none essential items that people are making, picking and delivering? If anyone thinks these "Covid secure" factories and warehouses are safer than schools then then they haven't been in them. I think my original post was still raw and i didn't get my point across properly and i apologise for that. On a personal level i have no issue with the teacher following her unions advice. I expect the schools to shut in due course and my children to once again suffer greatly. Trying to keep my wife calm as she had a breakdown last time and I have to go to work in the morning before she leaves with the kids and hope she's ok. Think I'll log off for he evening and try and get my head round it and suffer in silence. Again apologies if my views have upset anyone.
You're totally entitled to your POV and I know what a tough time your wife had last lockdown. Is the TA one that your child knows well?
No need to suffer in silence, that isn't good for anyone. I understand why you are angry and worried but I think you are angry at the wrong person in this situation. I hope everything works out for you, I really do.
just read this, interesting A message for those who don't work in schools. Over the next few days and probably weeks, the press and government will attack education workers relentlessly for trying to ensure schools are safe. We've seen it throughout the pandemic and it has a huge impact on staff. Some like myself are so used to it and desensitized it doesn't affect me anymore, but it will for so many. Even if schools are online, we will still be working, just in a different way and to save lives both in schools and wider communities. What we do will be harder as a result and will take longer. Within reason, we are always willing to work hard and largely do 50-60 hours a week, in normal circumstances. We do not want schools online where pupils, staff and communities can be kept safe. We want them open safely for children, teachers and wider communities but at present with current policy, this is not the case. We will however continue to have vulnerable children and key workers' children in the building but under safer conditions, as others (in secondary at least,) will be working from home. Had the government listened to us in March, May, July, November or even to their own scientists we would not be here. We proposed control measures that would have helped, we asked for action in November over rising case numbers and again before Xmas. On this occasion they threatened LAs with legal action and injunctions, even though at this point they knew about the new variant. It is also clear from the evidence now that schools are the main driver of community transmission. Please support school staff, who work tirelessly to educate your children. If changes come late, it is because the government delayed. We are disappointed neither you or we were given the notice needed to properly prepare for the impact of late decisions. If you can publicly post support for education workers on social media, every post will help counter the narrative which will impact on so many of us. If you know education workers a message of support or a kind word means so much. #stillworking #stillteaching #supportingthenhs #savinglives
“Schools are safe” is such a stupid tag line. Even a second of critical thinking makes it absolutely obvious it’s not true. I know of 2 teachers (note I said know of, not know) that have sadly passed away due to Covid in the Barnsley area. Try telling their families schools are safe.
As a food supermarket worker, I'm not safe. There are many current roles that are not safe. You make the best of a bad job. I'd have expected more of many teachers who feel they are not safe. I trust as their working environment is so unsafe, they are not visiting supermarkets during their time off and are availing themselves of delivery or click n collect options only.
There's some speculation and casual evidence that the new form of the virus is more contagious with younger children. This might explain the government closing down schools in London, because otherwise what's changed from their previous assertion that young kids don't really spread the virus? It's all, as usual poorly explained, if at all.
