A sprinter in football boots. The fact he was capped for the England youth teams says a lot about our approach and why we don't win stuff. We pick the kids who are biggest, fastest and strongest and they do well against other countries' youngsters due to the physical advantages. Then they plummet down the leagues after the age of 20 because they can't kick a ball and the advantages of their early physical development are negated when playing against proper mesters. Other countries pick the kids who have technique, vision and nous. They might not win the under 20s World Cup but it helps them develop and when they catch up physically they're light years ahead.
Aye we've had some crap down the years. I thought George Waring and Lalkovic were good that season. I don't know whether it was Waring that didn't want to sign permanently or it was Stoke that scuppered any possible deal but it didn't do his career any favours.
Can remember him being outpaced several times by 30 odd year old day-walker Dean Lewington away at MK Dons. So I'm not even convinced he was particularly quick.
Didn't Lee Johnson say that we'd signed a better striker than Waring in Connor Wilkinson? I vaguely remember the question being put to him at the time, and he said he preferred Wilkinson. I rated Waring, and his goal record was brilliant for us. He didn't do it elsewhere though sadly. I found Lalkovic frustratingly inconsistent.
I didn’t rate Lalkovic or Kiwomya. Didn’t think either had any end product. Waring definitely had something but wasn’t very mobile. I think I read that he really struggles with injuries & looking at his record he’s never played anything close to a full season.
I rated Waring, but I think that his injury problems really got in the way of him having a good career.
