According to the regulations any exercise has to start from home but surely the police have got better things to do

Burglars and other criminals must be highly active if this is how scarce police resources are being used. If this is a true story it’s appalling!

Hopefully they will wait for a court hearing and then deny the offence on the grounds of uncertainty.

Clearly there is no crime in Derbyshire.

    • outdoor exercise. This should be done locally wherever possible, but you can travel a short distance within your area to do so if necessary (for example, to access an open space)

That's a nice attempt to exaggerate the fact they travelled 5 miles.

Absolutely ridiculous. Pity Derbyshire police have nothing better do. I bet if your house had been burgled you’d have zero chance of seeing a copper.

I'm not anti police by any stretch, however weren't Derbyshire police following folk walking in the Peaks using drones in the first lockdown? I used to live in the Peaks, maybe they want local walks for local people?

TBF I have seen something that did state exercise must start & finish at home, on the BBC website I think, I'll have a quick look.

    from gov.uk/coronavirus

    Exercising

You should minimise time spent outside your home, but you can leave your home to exercise. This should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area.

You can exercise in a public outdoor place:

    • by yourself
    • with the people you live with
    • with your support bubble (if you are legally permitted to form one)
    • in a childcare bubble where providing childcare
    • or, when on your own, with 1 person from another household
This includes but is not limited to running, cycling, walking, and swimming. Personal training can continue one-on-one unless everyone is within the same household or support bubble.

    Public outdoor places include:

    • parks, beaches, countryside accessible to the public, forests
    • public gardens (whether or not you pay to enter them)
    • the grounds of a heritage site
    • playgrounds
Outdoor sports venues must close, for example:

    • tennis courts
    • golf courses
    • swimming pools
Children under 5, and up to 2 carers for a person with a disability who needs continuous care, are not counted towards the gatherings limits for exercising outside.

If you (or a person in your care) have a health condition that routinely requires you to leave home to maintain your health - including if that involves travel beyond your local area or exercising several times a day - then you can do so.

When around other people, stay 2 metres apart from anyone not in your household - meaning the people you live with - or your support bubble. Where this is not possible, stay 1 metre apart with extra precautions (like wearing a face covering).

So what's the actual rule then? It's the equivalent of someone driving from Darton (South Yorkshire) to Yorkshire Sculpture Park (West Yorkshire). Common sense must apply. This is the same force that flew drones over the Peak District however so they've got form.

Stay local, but don't think you're crossing a border, even if it's only 5 miles*, even if it's for some outdoor exercise and company. And if you've got the cheek to take a hot drink, well my friend you've just gone and broken the picnic rule. Good job they didn't take a scotch egg, they'd have been done under the Substantial Meal Act 2020 too.

*Unless driving from Barnard Castle for an unspecified amount of time to test your eyesight before heading back to London.
