I said that I thought hospitals were usually full ICU's weren't. And it is like flu only more contagious and with less vaccinated people. Both are respiratory viruses that kill people.
W H O just released Flu figures ▪ Globally, despite continued or even increased testing for influenza in some countries, influenza activity remained at lower levels than expected for this time of the year. ▪ In the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, influenza activity remained below interseasonal levels, though sporadic detections of influenza A and B viruses were reported in some countries. ▪ In the temperate zone of the southern hemisphere, influenza activity was reported at interseasonal level. no one dieing of flu anymore it seems 2017/18 winter was worse in last few years 50,000 excess deaths in UK ,do not get me wrong I am not a covid non believer but shows how less reactive we were only a couple of years ago to excess deaths,
I still don't think Lockdowns are an effective way of combating a Virus such as Covid, unless they are total lockdowns and include border closures. Anything else is pointless. Appreciate this is what you have wanted from the start. It's not going to happen and fatigue amongst many will make this less effective than last March.
I’m a bit fed up with graphs and charts all showing different things. I saw one earlier today that said beds were at 84-89% occupied for the last four weeks of 2020 vs. 93-97% for last four weeks of 2019. And that would be on 7,000 less beds. So are we short on ICU Units more than beds? Some positive news from one report, in that in terms of new cases we might have seen the peak. But it will obviously take weeks for that to pull through in the numbers. Fingers crossed.
I really ******* hope so. I know 4 people that are currently in hospital in various stages. It's an absolute nightmare situation.
We cant be far off the pealk I hope - I think we are seeing the effects of Christmas mixing and students travelling etc but that is now all in the past and with the whole country in lockdown it should start to drop. Not seen any sign that the infection rates are dropping yet though if you look at the positive tests graph its still going up fairly steeply
The measures we've taken to prevent the spread of Covid-19 also work in preventing the spread of other viruses like influenza, which is why many believe we've had fewer cases this year.
People are struggling with the concept of staying at home unless having to go out for something essential. I remember how quiet the roads were at the start of Lockdown 1. There doesn't seem to be any difference in traffic this time.
Our reaction as a society to the current virus is not proportionate to our reaction to fatalities from any other cause with the exception of terrorism. There are many reasons for that, but the main reason there wasn't an outcry to the deaths from flu was that it wasn't deemed newsworthy. There are thousands of deaths from flu every year, some years are worse than others and although there is a lot of data and studies on this it rarely makes the headlines.
