We were in the Kemlyn Rd stand. After the game, we went back to the car in Stanley Park. We couldn't get into it as the lock was frozen. Took us ages to sort it. Must have been 3am before we got home. A few hours kip, then school.
We were in Kremlyn Rd stand at opposite end to the Kop and didn't get in til half time. The violence after the match was the worst I have seen following football.
Actually brought a tear to my eye reading the praise from the Liverpool perspective. No ‘teams like Barnsley’, Just how good we were, and without Glavin and Parker.
There was a piece in one of the papers about a Barnsley fan who had his back slit open with a stanley knife. To be honest I didn't see anything on the way back to the car.
Brilliant. I wasn’t allowed to go to night away games. Knowing my Mam & Dad ( both gone), probably still not..
There was an interview with Bob Paisley in the program for the replay (which I've got somewhere. I'll try to find it later) in which he said that we were a harder team to beat than the ones they had played in the European Cup that season.
I lived in Cambridge at the time and had work the next morning, it must have been 2 or 3 in the morning by the time I dropped my dad off in Bolton on Dearne. I must have got back to my digs about 6, had some breakfast then went straight to work.... I think I slept most of the day
Kids no older than 4 dropping milk bottles out of trees at passing fans in Stanley Park. Saw the last 10 mins, scouser outside ground told us it was 1-0 to them and I didn't know the truth til next day. No mobiles, Internet or teletext and next days papers didn't always have the results if you got an early print.
I can’t tell you how many Barnsley fans were in the ground, but I can tell you how many Liverpool fans were in the Kop two minutes after the final whistle,,,,,,,, NONE!!! Ha Ha Ha!
Aylott put header over bar, when he normally would have scored,Liverpool had a team of internationals though and we had no Glavin or Parker, there is some video on YouTube I think but as usual VHS quality makes it poor to watch aesthetically, but you get flavour of atmosphere etc The Gangs outside beating up Reds fans were all local scallys, many not even going to or been to match, tipping a disabled Barnsley fan out of their wheel chair, sums it up
I still have press cuttings somewhere from various papers, I went with my Dad that night managed to avoid the carnage on the M62 and was asked when walking to the ground by a middle aged Liverpool supporter if he could walk with us because he didn`t feel safe walking on his own. We sat at the side of the players tunnel at right angles to the Barnsley end these tickets were bought at Oakwell so there were certainly Barnsley fans on two sides.
