I guess the biggest nervousness is we don't know how much the likes of Styles, Palmer etc... have benefitted from Mowatt and James being at the club. Look at the effect Sollbauer's arrival had on Andersen. A midfield two picked out of Style, Kane or Palmer will have some quality, but barely any experience and with that some naivety.

I'd hoped (and still do) that not pursuing James for the rest of the season was a sign that things were closer with Mowatt. Losing both will also have an impact on the development of the younger players. You need experienced players to play alongside and learn from.

If we sell for the figures quoted, it will cost more in the long run, all a matter of opinion of course. Can see the argument for cashing in, but in this scenario think we're better off not doing.

so as we’re likely to get £1m and £250k of that goes to Leeds, we would be ‘cashing in’ for £250k! Fans in the stadium or not, that’s not a useful ‘profit’ to make for seriously weakening the team.

(and tbh the elephant in the room is there were no bids in the summer, and there’s none yet).

I know the club say they've not had the reported offers but I'll just say this. IMHO the club need to decide what is happening with Mowatt if he won't sign new contract this week so by the end of this week he's either signed a new contract (best case) or he's staying until the summer and we stick to this or he's out of the door and replaced. The worst thing would be for this to drag on until the last couple of days of the window when he then leaves and we can't get a replacement. I'm not a big fan of the implementation of the clubs transfer policy and don't think that when compared to other clubs we get best value for our players but if he is to go let's get it done sooner rather than later then we can move on with either an internal or external replacement.

I imagine a sell on would be 15% of any profit to leeds so 15% of 500k= 75k. And like said we would have 925k to re invest better than Jack all come summer. All opinions id cash in you wouldn't.

Dont believe they would get a replacement. They will expect Styles Palmer Kane, or Push Halme into the Midfield

I’ve read (no more an expert than anyone) that we got him cheap with a 50% sell on.

We could sell him for 1m.

Buy a replacement, and the replacement breaks his leg in first day of training.

I dont think that argument about selling someone just in case they might get injured is a particularly strong one to have.

Maybe so if he has a long injury list in his career, but mowatt doesnt

Was just a extreme example of if a 7 figure sum was on the table and we are going to lose him for nothing that he would be sold, it would become a business decision.

We got Woodrow for free with a 50% sell on. We paid £500k for Mowatt, there’s no way there is as much as 50% on the sell on over that. 20% maybe.

Even at 20% we’re looking at a ‘profit’ of less than half a million, for the captain of a high performing team.

the club have told us there’s no financial incentive to sell anyone this season (they’ll balance the books without), I can’t understand why anyone thinks this is a good idea.

Yes but if the replacement breaks a leg in the first training session, he’d be on a three or four year contract so we’d get the benefit of him when he’s recovered and the time and money put into his recovery would be justified.

Mowatt would effectively be a deadwood wage for nothing if he got a bad injury, as he’d be leaving in summer anyway. It’s a different thing.

I want him to stay. There is an argument to keep him even if he doesn’t sign - but if there is a bid of over £1million, I think it’s poor business to refuse it. These owners aren’t daft, and they have got progressively better in the transfer dealings coming into the club in my view.

I’m more concerned about the Styles bids/rumours.

It isn’t about what profit you make on him. Or even balancing the books.

If he stays and doesn’t sign a new deal, we have to replace him anyway, but with a starting point of zero.

Or, we could replace him, and have a million or so to do it or as a starting point to do it.

If we were in the bottom third, and he was top of the assists table - or if he was integral to how we play like Conor Hourihane was, then yeah, run it down.

As it is, we don’t really play through midfield so much, and we have the legs and ability to be combative.

I want him to stay, but for me that means he needs to sign the dotted line. If not, I’d sell if it’s for over £1million.

Like I said above, I’m more concerned about Callum Styles. If they take anything less than £8million and a 20% sell on for him, it is that which is foolish.

But even with the lessons learnt by the board, I suspect anything over £3mil would be snapped up.

As said elsewhere in this thread, it's all about opinions. Mine is that it would be poor business to accept £1million for one of our best players, if not our best player, regardless of his contract.

Especially as we have already lost matty james.

Now styles is rumoured and this with mowatt.

That COULD be 3 of the midfield gone. And I say could.

Keith hill lost his entire midfield in about 2 weeks, and looked what happened then.

Yep. We can't have a situation like in August 2019, where there are departures that may make sense in isolation, but the departures together lead to us being significantly weaker in the long run.

Yep, if they complete that signing, that will be first domino down, clubs like Forest, QPR, Millwall etc... that have been looking for a midfielder will now have to concentrate on other targets.
