I think my time has spent convincing myself Chaplin will make it at Championship level. Hope im proved wrong but no sign of it. Victor looks ok as a impact sub but offers little when starts. Total combined Barnsley appearances - 113 Total Combined Barnsley Goals - 17 Goal every 6 and a half games roughly. Nothing personnel against either but were all moaning about lack of goals n threat, well this is why. Averaging about 6 goals a season between them in there career appearances. I know some are sub appearances but it doesn't take away from the alarming stats. Until their replaced we wont score enough goals. Too reliant on Woodrow which makes him out of position most of time.
In fairness, Conor Chaplin scored 12 times last season and was vital in terms of what was achieved. In his first season at the level. He was 19th in the 'top scorer' standings across the division. He scored more goals than Martyn Waghorn, Famara Diedhiou, Lyle Taylor, Chris Martin, Britt Assombalonga, Charlie Austin, Rhian Brewster, Kieffer Moore.... I could go on and on. The goals aren't happening for him so far this season, that's true. But he's playing more of a wide role, not as a central striker. Last night he was inches away from an Adeboyejo cross. Conor then put over a perfect cross that Woodrow couldn't quite direct home. A few games ago he hit the bar. He had one blocked on the line just last weekend too. It happens for strikers/forwards. I think he's a very talented player who'll only get better. And he didn't cost anything like the cash you'd need to have spent on most of the players I named further up. As for Victor, there was probably zero expectation from Reds fans about him this season. But he's been vital in many games this term, scored a couple of great goals. And again, playing in a wider role than he's used to. Like Conor, giving it his all. And again, not costing the club an arm and a leg. We already have one of the division's best strikers in the team, a prolific goalscorer entering his prime, in Cauley Woodrow. The opposition last night had a £25,000,000 player on the wing, two £8,000,000 midfielders, a £12,000,000 striker (who has one goal in 13 games by the way).... it's a different world! We have some very good players, and for me, an even better 'team'. Keep the faith. We're doing very well this season.
Penalties still need scoring though. And he'd scored before having to take one of them. And won two of the others.
If we had someone who could actually cross, things might be different. All anyone seems to do is stop, look round and give the ball away. Has Val clicked "Look for Overlap" on the tactics page or summat?
You must be watching a different team to me. My biggest bugbear is that now James has gone, no-one wants to stop or look round. They do give the ball away, though. I'll give you that. One out of three ain't bad.
That stat is pretty misleading with regards to Chaplin - he's on 15 in 69 games! It's like saying Kane and Henderson's joing scoring record for England isn't great, at 32 goals in 109 games. They're both promising, improving players who are years away from their prime. Our style of play isn't leading to many chances for them.
Totally agree..... Some of his deliveries are a class above. Because of the system We play our central striker can’t play on the last defender and our wide strikers are too late into the box... When you look at other teams and other systems, they have 2-3-4 player in the box within seconds of the ball moving wide
Just for a giggle: Average game minutes per goal in open play this season: Adeboyejo: 340 minutes (680 minutes / 2 goals) Woodrow: 605 minutes (1816 minutes / 3 goals) Chaplin: 781 minutes (1542 minutes / 2 goals)
Not sure you can blame the system, we just don’t have forwards that are very good headers of the ball (don’t know about Morris yet), so they don’t get into positions very often to challenge for them. Woodrow in particular would prefer to hang back and hope for a pull back or poor clearance.
Yes but we have one very obvious weak spot we lack creativity and fire power in the final third and that's either because the players aren't good enough or the system the manager has the team playing prevents the players performing to the best of their ability.
I think the strikers are dropping too deep , Woodrow especially . If big keiffer was here he would have had a sack full
I've said this for ages there isn't anyone who can just play the killer ball but I do think Herbie as got it in his locker , just needs game time now
Without me trawling through your historical posts, can you tell me what your expectations/hopes were in pre-season? Or even - if it helps - when Val arrived?
There is nothing much to grumble about at the moment. We ought not to expect anything more than a valiant seasonal attempt to stop in this league. This season's attempt has exceeded expectations thus far. Nevertheless, only the blind would fail to notice that there is a deficiency in our strike force. We seem to have a pleasing culture at the club of playing it sweetly around on the deck and getting into promising positions. Val's had us get it up front quicker at all costs, but he's still got the Stendel/Struber legacy of busy bee passing once we get past half way. This legacy also inherited our forwards' lack of goal threat. We can't go on championing forwards who don't score enough. Whether we're prepared to pay for alternatives is another thing. We've had 3 good managers in a row. Workmen who need proper sharp tools to do the job. Then Val might be able to model something special.
